About Charles

As a classroom teacher with over 15 years experience, I'm well-suited to help you with your writing, English, study skills, and ESL. Currently I teach ESL in an online classroom part-time. Most of my experience has been as an English teacher with a specialty in writing. I have an MFA in creative writing from UMASS/Amherst and have taught writing at all levels, from 6th grade through college.
In addition to teaching and tutoring experience, I've worked as a volunteer in hospice and hospital setting, written hundreds of grant proposals for nonprofits, and taught yoga. I have an eclectic background and hope to be able to help you with your current studies.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Vocabulary is a major strong point of mine. In teaching vocabulary, I help students learn the joy of discovering and using new words, phrases, and expressions. In every English class I ever taught, I assigned weekly vocabulary lists, usually based on students' reading. Students learned the word, its part of speech, and how to use it in a sentence.

Writing should ultimately be a fun and creative act. It involves drafting, peer and teacher feedback, and polishing. My specialty has been in the teaching of writing. I believe in empowering students to find their voices in writing and to be the best writers they can be, in both academic and creative genres.
