About Jacob

Mastering Latin can enhance academic success for any student: it enriches critical thinking, helps with standardized testing, and impresses elite colleges. That said, it isn’t easy, and even the most gifted students will sometimes need a little extra help. I have the skills and experience to identify a student’s learning style and guide them to classroom success. Whether the student is struggling with the material, or just wants to work ahead, I can give them the boost they need to achieve. I have been studying Latin since I was twelve years old, majored in Classics in college, and worked nine terms at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (“CTY”), an academic summer program for which I taught Latin and Greek & Latin Etymologies. Thanks to the time and individual attention we gave our students at CTY (typically 12-17 years old), they completed an entire college semester of Latin in three weeks. At the end of the course, we evaluated them using a mock administration of the National Latin Exam. Nearly all students passed with very high marks, and many passed with scores high enough to earn national awards.

I have a fun and dynamic teaching style that stresses fundamentals while keeping students excited about Latin. I have studied and/or taught from most of the major Latin coursebooks, and I have had the time and opportunity to learn what works and doesn’t work for many different types of students. I filter my language instruction through the lens of Roman culture so that the student understands how the time and place informed the language, and vice versa. A number of my students have gone on to study classics or related topics at elite colleges, and those I have spoken with have cited our Latin class as a major inspiration. I now work as a lawyer, but I want teaching Latin to remain a part of my life. I’m available in all of New York City except Staten Island, and parts of Long Island or New Jersey may be possible on a case-by-case basis. References are available on request.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I have a BA in Classics, focusing on Latin Literature and Roman Culture. I worked for five years at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, where I taught Latin to nearly a hundred students and achieved excellent results. I have a fun, dynamic teaching style that stresses fundamentals while using cultural and historical context to keep the material engaging.

Government & Politics

I have a Juris Doctor and I am an attorney licensed to practice in New York. I received top marks in Constitutional Law classes in Law School, and was selected as a tutor for advanced constitutional law courses by the Student Bar Association.

Latin

Over five years, I have taught Latin to nearly a hundred 12-17 year olds at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Summer Program. We provided intensive, one-on-one support in the classroom and I developed skills and experience crucial to identifying a student's learning style and helping them overcome the obstacles specific to them. I stress grammar and fundamentals, but use Roman culture and history to keep the material relevant and exciting.
