About Steve

I am a professional with twenty years experience helping others improve their writing. I taught basic English Composition and Creative Writing at Brooklyn College and Borough of Manhattan Community College, and have worked as a publisher's editorial consultant. I can help you bring any piece of writing, on any subject, to its full potential. I am clear, tactful, and constructive in my comments and can help you see how much more ability you possess than you currently believe. I have had many compliments and expressions of gratitude from authors I have worked with. My method is to help you see how easy it can be to improve a particular piece of writing, often by making only small changes. I can also help you discover your own voice and learn how best to articulate your perceptions.

Whether you are working on a college application essay, a school assignment, or something you must write for work, I can help you do the best job possible, as I have for students, doctors, lawyers, and professional writers. I also taught literature courses and can help you not only better understand the reading you are doing, either for school or your own pleasure, but learn to enjoy it more than you imagined you could. I have an MFA from Brooklyn College, have published poetry, essays, encyclopedia articles and literary journalism. I am currently at work on my second book.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

I am very familiar with many periods of art, both eastern and western, especially contemporary art both American and European. I was director of public programs at three New York City Museums. I have also written about contemporary photography.

Bible Studies

I hold a CUNY-BA in Religion which I earned at Hunter College (1995). In addition, I worked for one year (1998-99) at the American Bible Society, writing the captions for an illustrated teaching bible for children based on a new translation, the Contemporary English Version, designed to be heard rather than read. I continue to read widely in the area of religion, especially Christianity and Buddhism and developing dialogues and relationships between the two.

English

I have taught graduate-level classes and classes on theory. I am also currently helping a professor review the content for a book on critical theory and reader response theory.

Grammar

Having taught basic English Composition, Creative Writing, Research Writing, and Computer Assisted Writing in two CUNY colleges, I know how challenging grammar can be. But many mistakes can be easily corrected and explained. Learn how to avoid the most common mistakes and improve both your spoken and written English.

Literature

I have an MFA in poetry from Brooklyn College, where I was also president of the English Grad Students Organization, editor of Brooklyn Review 15, and received two commendations from the English Department, one for outstanding contribution to the department. For four years I taught Brooklyn College's Core Literature course: Landmarks in Western Literature, and in Brooklyn College's Summer in London Theater Program.

Proofreading

An endorsement for my work as Editorial Consultant at iUniverse, by Lynn Holm editor at iUniverse

"Steve has a superior critical eye. He is able to read book manuscripts at various stages of readiness for publication and explain in detail exactly what they need to reach their potential. Equally vital, he is able to deliver that information to authors in a tactful, constructive, and clear manner. We have had many compliments and expressions of gratitude from authors about Steve's evaluations.

Steve is able to juggle multiple assignments and is absolutely dependable; when he says something will be completed, it will be completed without fail.

I have no reservations about recommending Steve for any job for which he feels qualified. He is wonderful to work with."

Public Speaking

I am a poised and confident public speaker and expert at teaching others to feel confident when they are facing an audience. As director of public programs at three New York City museums, I often rehearsed lecturers before they presented a program. I also coached students in public speaking while teaching at Brooklyn College. In my literature classes, every student was required to memorize a passage of their choice from the semester's reading. Those students who were most anxious about public speaking rehearsed with me in my office until they felt able to face their classmates.

Reading

I am a published writer in several genres and have evaluated manuscripts for a publisher at various stages of completion. I am a firm believer in encouraging, rather than criticizing, and helping students to realize how much more they know and are capable of than they realize.

Religion

My BA is in Comparative Religion, which I earned at Hunter College in 1995. Prior to that I taught a three-part seminar on the work of the American Trappist monk, Thomas Merton. After earning my BA I have continued to read widely in many religious traditions, especially Tibetan and Zen Buddhism, and the growing literature about the "Emerging Church" that is developing in contemporary Christianity. I am a regular practitioner of meditation and have completed two levels of training for meditation instruction at the Shambala Center in New York City. I was also on the first steering council for the newly formed Karuna Sangha which meets at the Zen Center for Contemplative Care in New York City.

Theater

I have worked both onstage and off. In my twenties I was house electrician for Charles Ludlam's Ridiculous Theatrical Company, running lights for over 60 performances of one play. I have also designed the lights for several plays and one dance company. In addition, I have performed onstage with both the Ridiculous and at The Comedy Club and studied acting at HB Studios. While an adjunct at Brooklyn College, I taught in their Theater in London Progam - my job was to accompany students to ten plays in two months. We saw the whole first season of the newly opened Globe Theater. During the day I taught a class in Modern European Drama.

Vocabulary

Building your vocabulary is easier than you think. And the rewards are immediate. In just a few minutes a day, your larger vocabulary can actually increase your I.Q. and help you communicate better and understand more of what you read.

Writing

Before returning to school to earn an MFA, for ten years I worked in many corporate offices and law firms. I am very familiar with business writing and terms, as well as many of the issues that business students must discuss.

Very experienced

I learned how to revise the sentences to clarify my ideas with just a simple tweak. I have worked with many instructors and Steve is no doubt one of the best. He also has work experience with international students, which is also helpful for identifying problems.
