About Alexa

I am a French tutor for students K-12 in the Chicagoland area including the Loop, Lake View, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, and Bucktown area. I can meet after school hours and on weekends for 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 1 hour. We can meet close to school, at a coffee shop or your house. These sessions could be individual or in small groups. I charge, $25 for 30 minutes, $30 for 45 minutes and $50 an hour.

I have 13 years of experience with the French language, including tutoring peers in French studies. I began studying languages at the age of 5, french since the age of 11. In high school I participated in the National French Exams in NY, and have participated in the National French Honor Society. The National French Exams were national tests ranking students on their conversational abilities, writing, grammar, and listening competencies. The French Honor Society was a highly selective organization for the top french students in high school. At that time, I was also tutoring middle school students who were having trouble in French. In high school was in AP French as well.

In College, I took four years of french language and studies. Some classes taken included: Intermediate French II, Advanced Conversation and Composition, Rousseau’s Legacy: Survey of French Literature, Survey of French Literature, Conspiracies and Secret Societies in the 19th and 20th Centuries. My junior year of college I studied abroad in Paris, France, where I lived with a French host family and took classes at the Sorbonne. These classes were both lecture style classes as well as small group discussions. All classes were held in french with french professors and students. Some classes take there included:Translation: Theme & Version, France in the 20th century, Literature of Gustave Flaubert and Marguerite Yourcenar. Currently, I hold a B.A. from Bard College, where I studied French literature and philosophy ranging from Rouseau to Flaubert and completed my college thesis in French studies.

Post graduation I wished to maintain my language proficiencies. I took classes at the Alliance Française in New York and in then again in Chicago. I am currently finishing my master's degree in dance/movement therapy and counseling, and wish to share and excite students about the french language and culture. My style of tutoring is catered to the individual with whom I am working. I am patient, engaging, and creative in the ways in which I help my students hone their linguistic skills. I am able to practice listening activities and help hone grammar, conversational, writing, and reading skills.

Separately, I have several years of experience working with individuals with special needs, including intellectual disabilities and developmental delays. I have worked with individuals with a wide variety of needs and would be willing and excited to work with you or your child. I could assist in french and latin, history, english, biology and psychology.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

Over the past 13 years, I have experience of interacting with students with special needs, in particular, ADD/ADHD. I have been a dance assistant in a studio for special needs, and a preschool assistant teacher for severely disabled children. I am currently pursuing my master's in dance/movement therapy and counseling where I have worked with individuals with ADD/ADHD in a clinical setting. I am patient, compassionate, and creative with the ways in which I help students engage and focus in their work. I am passionate of educating others and I hope that I can be of assistance to you as a tutor!

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have just under 10 years of experience working with individuals ranging from 5-60 years of age with a range of abilities along the autism spectrum. Among the differing positions I experienced with this population are dance assistant, substitute teacher, and will be shortly receiving my master's degree and license in Dance/movement therapy and counseling. I just recently finished a 9 month long internship as a dance/movement therapist and counselor working with individuals with co-occurring mental health diagnoses in conjunction with being on the spectrum. I am patient and understand the compassion that is needed and am interested in helping individuals excel to their fullest potential academically.

Ballet

For the past 21 years, my passion for dance, particularly ballet, has inspired most of my life decisions. I began dancing ballet at the age of three, and have not stopped dancing since.

From the ages of 3-18, I was in two separate pre-professional ballet companies in New Jersey where we would perform at least 3 times a year. I have studied ballet in New Jersey, New York City, Chicago, and Paris, France. I graduated with a B.A in dance from Bard College specializing in dance technique and choreography. Currently, I am completing my master's degree in dance/movement therapy and counseling. I bring my passion for dance and movement to populations of all ages and abilities. I am most interested in teaching anatomically correct positions as well as promoting a healthy relationship to one's body through movement. I get excited sharing my love for dance with others and I hope that I could be of assistance to you.

Among the differing positions I experienced with this population are dance assistant, substitute teacher, and will be shortly receiving my master's degree and license in Dance/movement therapy and counseling. I just recently finished a 9 month long internship as a dance/movement therapist and counselor working with individuals with co-occuring mental health diagnoses in conjunction with having intellectual and developmental delays. I am patient and understand the compassion that is needed. I am interested in helping individuals excel to their fullest potential academically while bridging my tutoring capabilities, mainly in the french language, with this population. While I specialize in the French language, I hope to be of assistance with other subjects!

Volleyball

I have 13 years of experience playing volleyball. I played varsity in high school, and was team captain my senior year.

In college, I played Division 3 as the setter. Most of my experience is in playing setter or Libero, but I can coach blocking and spiking as well. I am currently pursuing a certificate in Movement Observation and Analysis which augments my coaching abilities. As a movement analyst, I have the ability to train students about movement efficiency, injury prevention, as well as self-care to prevent physical or mental burn out.
