THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN (BS Chemistry)
I am a current high school science teacher at a prestigious private school in New York. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor of science in chemistry, with an additional focus on biology coursework. In my 9 years as a teacher, I have had experience teaching biology, chemistry, AP chemistry, and environmental science. Before moving to New York, I taught at a prominent private school in Los Angeles and served as the science department chair, working closely with other teachers to develop lesson plans and curriculum that engages students and gets them excited about learning science.
Every student learns in his or her own way, and as an educator, I make every effort to make the subject relevant and meaningful. When I work one-on-one with students, I ask questions to help them think critically about the topic, and work with what they already know to help them discover answers of their own accord. My goal is to help students become more independent learners so that they can continue to work successfully when they are on their own. When possible, I also do my best to prepare some resources in advance of meeting with the student in order to provide additional practice outside of what is being provided by the student's teacher. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I majored in chemistry at the University of Texas, completing coursework in two semesters of introductory chemistry, two semesters of organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry. I have been teaching chemistry and AP chemistry for the past 8 years at the high school level, and have had incredible success engaging students with a subject that is usually considered to be overly challenging and uninteresting. Chemistry is my passion, and I absolutely love every aspect of the subject.
