Oberlin College (East Asian Studies)
I have taught English as a Second Language in three different countries over the past eight years. Most recently I was an Assistant Professor of English Language at a university in Tokyo, Japan. There I taught classes in reading and writing for two years. I also hosted a conversation circle and was a writing tutor for college students as well as graduate students. Before that, I taught English as a Second Language to students and communities at Oberlin College in Ohio. And before that I taught reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary to students in Bolivia.
Besides teaching English as a Second Language, I also taught college courses at Oberlin College. One was a film studies class, the other was a class on elementary school education. Over the years I have worked with students of all ages. I have also spent a lot of time abroad and have a decent understanding of Spanish language as well as a proficient understanding of Japanese. (Though I prefer teaching only in English.) I take my job seriously, but am also fun and know how to use games to help teach language. Having taught with various texts and curriculums, I can also adapt to the needs of the individual student. If you are interested, please let me know. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
