About Rebecca

Hi prospective tutoring clients!

I have worked an academic reading and writing tutor for undergraduate and graduate students for eight years at Hunter College's Reading/Writing Center. My extensive experience as an academic tutor has equipped me with the skills to help instruct a wide variety of students from different linguistic and socioeconomic backgrounds. I also have been teaching composition to undergraduate students for the past six years at Hunter College. As a college instructor, my focus has been on teaching expository writing to a very diverse student body. I have taught introductory level freshmen composition courses and intermediate level writing courses, which both focus on the revision, drafting, and peer editing processes. Most recently, I have taught literature courses, which include units on fiction, drama (Shakespeare), and poetry.

In addition to tutoring and mentoring newly hired tutors at the Reading/Writing Center, I tutor privately. I have worked with high school students on writing, time management, study skills, and test preparation, in addition to working with graduate students, in various disciplines, on lesson plans, research papers, citation (MLA, APA, Chicago, and AMA), and master's theses. I am very comfortable working with students of all ages; students who I have worked with in the past would be happy to provide references upon request.

I possess strong verbal and written communication skills, and I am confident that my interpersonal skills are very well developed. I strive to make students feel comfortable in the tutoring environment, and I truly believe that I, as a tutor, can grow from a successful tutor/student partnership as much as the student.

In addition to my teaching and tutoring experience, this past spring, I completed my master’s in British and American literature at Hunter College in 2014, where I focused, jointly, on the fields of linguistics and Victorian literature. For my undergraduate degree, I attended Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College for my undergraduate degree; there, I received my bachelor's in English. My concentration was literature and theory, but I also took several creative writing classes and minored in anthropological linguistics. I graduated magna cum laude from Macaulay Honors College and was selected to be a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Throughout my high school, undergraduate, and graduate schooling, I have always taken time management and studying very seriously. I am confident that I would bring the same dedication, success, work ethic, and positivity to any tutoring relationship that I form with you (or your child).

Please feel free to browse my profile to see the subject areas that I am approved to tutor through WyzAnt. Check back frequently, because I plan on taking more tests and submitting more materials to become approved in various disciplines. My main areas are literature, writing (ACT and SAT even!), and English language instruction (with an emphasis on grammar-- I am a grammar nerd!), but I also have a passion for American history, so you can see that I am also qualified to tutor that subject as well. I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

Before becoming an academic tutor, I worked as a college assistant in an administrative office within Hunter College. Through this position, I dealt with a variety of departments on campus, including Admissions, Student Services, and the financial aid office. I also worked with my peers one-on-one and helped them with their course planning, including helping them know which general education requirements and departmental requirements they would need to take and when to take them.

As a student, I navigated the course catalog, selecting classes during fall, spring, winter and summer sessions. Due to my honed course navigation skills and knowledge of certain pre and co-requisites, I was able to graduate within 4 years, which is below the average graduation rate at any CUNY campus.

I have been tutoring academic reading and writing for over eight years, primarily assisting undergraduate and graduate students. I also have extensive experience working with English language learners. I currently teach literature and composition at Hunter College.

I have been working with English Language Learners (ELLs) for over six years. I have extensive experience with this population through my work as an academic reading and writing tutor at Hunter College; there, I have worked with both undergraduate and graduate students who are ELLs. In addition to helping them with reading comprehension and the writing process, I have also helped them prepare for CUNY-wide assessment exams in reading and writing.

I have a passion for learning (and teaching!) grammar. From a young age, I was always curious about the way grammar 'worked,' almost viewing it like a puzzle. I wanted to figure out how to put the pieces together to make a full picture -- in this case, a full sentence.

However, since grammar is not often formally taught in schools in the US, I didn't learn how to appropriately explain the puzzle pieces until I started learning the grammatical structures of other languages and studying linguistics in college. It is still a learning process for me! This fall, I am beginning my second Master's degree; it will be in TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Education, specializing in teaching the Adult English Language Learner population.

My love for literature is about the only interest that eclipses my love for writing-- but the two interests definitely go hand in hand! I loved reading from a young age, enthusiastic to be able to create and explore my own worlds though the books I read.

This interest followed me all the way through high school, college, and graduate school. This past Spring, I completed my Master's in British and American Literature. As I pursued this degree, I still maintained a wide variety of interests in literature-- I studied drama, poetry, short fiction, and novels, in addition to literary theory.

My broad exposure to different types of literature--during both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English--has allowed me to effectively tutor students in literature at Hunter College's Reading and Writing Center. As a tutor over the past six years, I have helped students explicate poetry, analyze Shakespeare, and use theoretical lenses to help 'read' literature in a new way.

Study Skills

Working as an academic tutor for the past several years has presented me with many instances where I have had to help students develop strong and effective study skills.

I have also worked with students privately on time management when it comes to studying for tests and writing papers. For the latter task, I have emphasized the importance of the pre-writing and revision processes. Successful study skills, in my experience as both a tutor and a student, are based on realistic time management, an awareness of your strengths and weaknesses in a certain discipline or class, and how comfortable you are with asking for help (either from a teacher, fellow student, or tutor).

I am confident that I demonstrated strong study skills during my time as a student; I graduated magna cum laude with my Bachelor's in English and I also recently completed my Master's degree in literature with a 3.92 GPA. I am positive that I would not have had this academic success without the willingness to recognize what works and what does not work for me when it comes to study and writing.

In addition to my love of writing, I also have a lot of experience as a writing tutor and instructor! I have been working as an academic reading and writing tutor at Hunter College for over six years. There, I have helped many students, both native English speakers and English Language Learners (ELLs) with the invention, writing, and revising processes. I have experience tutoring students not only in subjects related to the study of humanities, but I have also worked with many students from the social science and medical fields.

I have been able to parlay my skills as a writing tutor into teaching expository writing. I have worked as an instructor, teaching writing to Hunter College undergraduates, for the past four years. Through teaching both introductory and intermediate writing courses, I have helped students create and revise a wide variety of writing assignments, including personal essays, descriptive essays, persuasive essays, and document-based research essays.

Excellent! — Rebecca is a wonderful tutor. She is precise, patient and very encouraging. She helped my 11th grade son organize all his notes for an English final and came up with a strategy for studying. Giving him the confidence to tackle six months of material. As a result of her working with my son he received a much higher grade on his final. My son found the experience to be extremely rewarding and helpfu ...
