About Richard

Hi, I’m Rich The Tutor and thanks for checking out my profile. With over 200 hours of experience on WyzAnt alone, I have a proven track record of successfully helping students achieve their scholastic goals. My students have experienced dramatically improved grades, substantial increases in their scores on standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, and SATII among others as well as enrichment in their writing ability, study skills, and self-confidence. When working together with my students, our goal is to not only address immediate academic needs, but also to pursue a holistic approach to make school work easier to tackle in the future.

I developed my broad spectrum approach based on over 15 years of teaching experience spanning the natural sciences and academic writing. Specifically, my academic background is in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. I graduated with my MPhil and PhD in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University and my BA in Biochemistry summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College. I'm also a published scientific author and worked as a writing fellow and academic writing consultant at the Graduate Writing Center at Yale University for several years. Most recently, I served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Bard College and the Rockefeller University.

The single most important thing that my teaching experience taught me is that students truly learn best when they are enjoying themselves. As a result, I've developed a teaching strategy that centers around clarity, patience, and positivity. My students are delivered clear and personalized explanations coupled with balanced positive encouragement from a patient and light-hearted instructor.

I'm currently available for in-home tutoring or tutoring online through Skype or Wyzant's online system. My online tutoring methodology consists of using a writing tablet to provide my students with step by step explanations in real time. After my online lessons, I provide students with a .pdf copy of the notes generated during the lesson. This way, my students have don’t feel pressured to take notes during the lesson. Finally, after both in-home and online lessons, I provide students with detailed feedback on their progress to date to help guide their study. My students are never left in the dark.

My services extend from helping students master tough concepts in the natural sciences to improving their scores on standardized tests. I also provide assistance in many forms of writing including term papers, scientific papers, and grants for publication as well as editing theses and dissertations. I routinely provide these services and guide my students through the process of writing: not only ensuring correct usage of grammar and vocabulary, but also imparting techniques for battling procrastination as well. Lastly, I’m also happy to help my students out with study skills / time management, college advising, and enrichment.

Please feel free to get in touch with me if you’d like to know more, setup an appointment, or engage with me in a free online 15-minute consultation so you can get to know me better. I hope to speak with you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I did very well on my ACT examination in 1999: I scored a 33 in the Reading section. Furthermore, I've practiced the same principles tested on the exam in my academic career for years. Finally, I've taught the material before in schools and as a private tutor many times.

My process involves diagnostic testing, understanding areas of weakness, and shoring up those areas with practice and instruction.

Algebra 1

In high school, I scored a 33/36 on my ACT Math exam and a 720 on the SAT II MathIIC examination as well as a 4 on my AP Calculus AB Examination. As part of my past job working in a laboratory, I was required to use Algebra all the time. Over the years, I've become very good at Algebra and actually am glad that I learned it so well in high school. I've tutored many students in Algebra as well and am confident I can make the material clear and interesting to any student.

Algebra 2

In high school, I scored a 33/36 on my ACT Math exam and a 720 on the SAT II MathIIC examination. As part of my past job working in a laboratory, I was required to use Algebra all the time. Over the years, I've become very good at Algebra and actually am glad that I learned it so well in high school. I've tutored many students in Algebra as well and am confident I can make the material clear and interesting to any student.

Biochemistry

I received my undergraduate education and PhD in Biochemistry and was an active researcher in a structural biology laboratory. My GPA in college was 3.78 and I scored an 83rd Percentile on the Biochemistry Subject GRE Exam. Additionally, I've taught the subject before at Yale University to wide acclaim.

Biology

I received my undergraduate education and PhD in Biochemistry and was an active researcher in a structural biology laboratory. My GPA in college was 3.78 and I scored a 740 on my SAT II Biology exam. Additionally, half of my major consisted of biology classes like biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and protein chemistry. I'm confident that I can teach this material well and help any student who is having trouble grasping the material.

Calculus

In high school, I scored a 33/36 on my ACT Math exam and a 720 on the SAT II MathIIC examination as well as a 4 on my AP Calculus AB Examination. As part of my past job working in a laboratory, I was constantly required to use and understand Calculus. I used X-ray crystallography as a primary technique in the laboratory and using it involves having a strong grasp of waves and how to sum them in three-dimensional space (a process that requires a lot of Calculus). Over the years, I've had lots of time to practice and explain Calculus. I am very confident that I can make the material clear and interesting to any student.

Chemistry

I received my undergraduate education and PhD in Biochemistry and was an active researcher in a structural biology laboratory. My GPA in college was 3.78 and I scored a 730 on my SAT II Chemistry exam. Additionally, in college I took two semesters of General Chemistry (A/A), two semesters of Organic Chemistry (A-/B+), two semesters of Physical Chemistry (A/B+), and one semester of Protein Chemistry (A-). I'm confident that I can teach this material well and help any student who is having trouble grasping the material.

Geometry

As part of my past job working as a structural biologist, I was required to use geometry on a regular basis. Over the years, I've had lots of time to practice both doing geometry and explaining it to others. I am very confident that I can make the material clear and interesting to any student.

Physics

I received my undergraduate education and PhD in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and was an active researcher in a structural biology laboratory. I'm confident that I can teach physics well and help any student who is having trouble grasping the material.

Prealgebra

In high school, I scored a 33/36 on my ACT Math exam and a 720 on the SAT II MathIIC examination as well as a 4 on my AP Calculus AB Examination.

I am very confident that I can make the material clear and interesting to any student. I have extensive experience working one on one with students of a variety of age groups from elementary school children through adults who are continuing their education. Finally, I maintain a calm demeanor while teaching that allows me to keep my students relaxed and focused during our lesson.

Precalculus

As part of my past job working in a laboratory, I was constantly required to perform calculations (especially non-complex ones involving heavy arithmetic). Over the years, I've had lots of time to practice both doing the calculations and explaining them to others. I am very confident that I can make the material clear and interesting to any student.

Proofreading

I have extensive experience tutoring English writing and grammar. I worked for a number of years as a graduate writing tutor and academic writing fellow at Yale University. Furthermore, I have copy edited and proofread dissertations and many manuscripts for publication. I am well-equipped to proofread any piece of material of any length or level of complexity.

Reading

I have extensive experience tutoring English reading, writing, and grammar. I previously worked with learning disabled children at a special education department of an elementary school and have years of experience tutoring.

Regents

I have over 15 years experience tutoring in NY state and have personally tutored many students for Regents exams. I was also educated in New York State and am very familiar with the content of the exams. Furthermore, I have a mastery of the required material from my undergraduate degree and doctorate in biochemistry. For all of these reasons, I am well-equipped to tutor for these exams.

SAT Math

I have extensive experience tutoring for the SAT and am well-equipped to teach strategies for maximizing scores. I am patient, positive, and friendly and always help my students to realize their full potential on these exams. My process involves diagnostic testing, understanding areas of weakness, and shoring up those areas with practice and instruction.

Study Skills

As a successful tutor, I help my students not only with specific subject matter, but also in time management and study skills. I provide the tools and knowledge to help them organize and managed their workload. Moreover, my student learn techniques for battling procrastination.

Trigonometry

In high school, I scored a 33/36 on my ACT Math exam and a 720 on the SAT II MathIIC examination as well as a 4 on my AP Calculus AB Examination. I am well-equipped to explain any topics in Trigonometry due to both my education and my aptitude on the ACT Math exam and SAT II MathIIC exam. Both of these exams require an extensive knowledge of Trigonometry and are a good measure of understanding of that topic.

Writing

I have extensive experience tutoring English writing and grammar. I worked for a number of years as a graduate writing tutor and academic writing fellow at Yale University. Furthermore, I have copy edited dissertations and many manuscripts for publication. In terms of writing, I can help you with style, organization, grammar, and clarity.
