Marist College (Elementary Education)
My name is Ciara and I am a recent graduate of Marist College. I majored in Psychology, Special education and Elementary education at Marist and am now looking for teaching positions. I love being an educator and want to continue this summer by tutoring students in multiple subjects. I have a passion for teaching reading and math and understand how important it is for students to be prepared for their next grade level.
I have tutored and taught students of multiple ages through my fieldwork and student teaching. I also love to incorporate music into education as that is another passion of mine. I value tutoring because I believe instruction can be extremely effective when the student receives one on one attention from an educator. I look forward to helping students succeed! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor all subjects K-6 because I am NY state certified to teach elementary education K-6. I am a 1st grade teacher with two years of experience in the classroom teaching all subjects (reading, math, science, social studies). I also tutor students that need extra attention after school.
I teach my scholars handwriting 10 minutes every school day. We practice forming our letters to perfection. I have also written a song called "Better Letters" which makes the work fun for them! Also, with handwriting it is also important to practice leaving spaces between words. I have a fun gimmick called 'space dude' and the students must leave space for him in between their words. It has proven to be a very successful trick!
I teach 1st grade students their sounds and decoding skills daily in order for them to become better readers. Every single one of my students last year met grade level benchmarks in reading and many exceeded the benchmarks reading at a 2nd grade and even a 3rd grade level. I have many skills to help students break down words and become independent readers.
