About Jared

I am a graduate of New York University. After graduating in just 3 years with a double major, two Latin honor society memberships, and a strong GPA, I now attend Fordham University School of Law to further my legal studies. I formed an integrative relationship between my two undergraduate majors, and because of this integration I have continued to use this strategy in my studies. The outcome has been spectacular, as a primary history major I took the opportunity to look at the psychological implications of historical events and actors. Similarly, this is a strategy I will bring to my students. If they understand two separate entities of liberal arts, most likely they can combine these two fields to form a more integrative, investigative, and interpretive knowledge of each subject.

I work well with all ages, especially high school students whom can grasp higher levels of understanding needed to cross disciplines but also keep them separate. I can also assist college students with any psychology work since my major required me to study all aspects of psychology thoroughly and then complete a lab (which I chose to pursue social psychology in). My history expertise spans from U.S colonial history to world history to more recent history surrounding both World Wars on a global scale and finally to watershed moments in recent U.S history such as the Civil Rights Movement.

My tutoring method usually relies on the student pushing themselves while I make sure they maintain their goals they set themselves with my guidance. Nothing is more beneficial to learning than attaining your own goals. Goals set by others can feel arbitrary and impossible, so self-goals are a must.

Editing has been my primary experience as a tutor, my most recent work at NYU has been as an editor for the NYU Historian, which is an undergraduate publication edited and operated by undergraduates. After working for a big-law firm in the city for two years, my editing skills grew sharper and more attuned to different nuances. I understand and have mastered the appropriate language necessary for psychology, history, sociology, and other major-related term papers and bring that knowledge to every paper I edit. I have also edited numerous college essays and understand how to teach young learners how to improve their writing skills from the big ideas up to the fine details.

Based on my previous editing and tutoring skills, I have developed a strong tendency to communicate very well with students. Coupled with my psychology degree, I know how to approach different situations and learning tendencies of the student so that the time we have is as productive as possible. I also utilize numerous strategies to keep learners focused and on-task, a skill that they will need and should practice while in session. I am very patient, but I will not allow a student to stray too far from the subject. I can also integrate myself with the learning style and speed of the student and keep up with their course work so that each and every session is a learning session between us rather than a review session. Because of this, I will read and review all materials before I visit the student to make sure that my notes and understanding of the topic is up to date and on-par with what their teachers expect.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Proofreading has become my specialty over the years since my undergraduate career. As a history major, I had to write complex, long, and concise term papers every single semester to retain my honor's status. During my junior year, I became an editor for the NYU Historian which allowed me to peer-review other works by college students and work with the student one-on-one to improve their writing in preparation for publication. Publication of a piece of writing is every writer's goal, and I learned how to get students to that point.

This level of publication required perfect proofreading skills which I mastered over the years by both editing my own papers, my friend's papers, and even editing college admissions letters for local high school students. To date, my students report that their scores on essays have increased significantly with a strong majority of writers reporting A's after my edits have been completed. I utilize multiple read-throughs of the material as well as educating myself on the subject to check the substance of the work and not just the spelling and the grammar. Because of my deep involvement in each and every paper, my students are able to rest-assured that their essays will be at the absolute best possible level when they are handed in to the professor on submission day.

I studied sociology at NYU and I have studied with many of the best names in Sociology. By combining my history and psychology primary majors with my sociology background, I was able to form a more complete understanding of sociology both based on the psychological aspect of our society and how we react to certain events as well as the historical aspect of sociology. Combined, my papers for sociology classes exhibit about 150 pages of material on numerous different subjects ranging from the Civil Rights Movement to the Chicano Movement to religion and society throughout the world and I later assisted younger students in several beginner and intermediate classes.
