About Horace

I have the background, test scores, and experience necessary to help you or your child achieve testing success. I hold undergraduate and graduate degrees from Yale and Columbia universities. My over thirteen years of teaching, coaching, and mentoring experience include:
- co-founding of a summer teen entrepreneur program
- lecturing at the City and State universities of New York
- working as a graduate teaching assistant at Columbia University
- receiving training from a major test prep company
- serving as an instructor at W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute (at Princeton University)
- and gaining certification as a USATF Level One coach.
I have helped over a hundred students from a half dozen countries prepare to sit for standardized exams.

I have worked hard to master test-taking, sitting for over 100 national or international standardized tests (including academic competitions and accreditation exams).
I have earned perfect scores on the SAT, the ACT, and on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE. My current high score for the GMAT is 780 and for the LSAT is 178.

I have helped many clients prepare for and navigate the daunting college and graduate admissions processes, identifying and exploiting opportunities within the tremendous variety of options available in North America and the United Kingdom. I have also helped many clients as they refine their applications and seek creative means to communicate their unique interests and strengths to admission committees.

I am eager to help you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

My experience in business & business-related fields has been varied and extensive. I am a former McKinsey & Co. consultant, and, in addition to extensive on-the-job training, I completed a number of Firm sponsored training programs including the mini-MBA, an intensive program in Strategy, Operations, Organization, Corporate Finance & Economics taught by instructors from INSEAD, HBS, Wharton & Kellogg Business Schools. Prior to this, I coached the Columbia Graduate Consulting Club, designing and delivering a training program that helped fellow doctoral candidates successfully apply to leading management consultancies. I am currently teaching Business, Economics & Finance to high achieving high schoolers at Princeton University.

College Counseling

I have served as convenor of Yale's Black Alumni Association's Mentoring Committee, which had as a core function, supporting efforts to improve the performance of under-represented applicants to the College. This gave me occasion to think deeply about what it is that Admission Committees at highly selective universities are looking for as well as how best to communicate that to high school students, particularly those for whom the Admissions process seems opaque. Prior to coaching full time, I also supported our Alumni Schools Committee by doing interviews of pre-selected prospective students. This experience has given me tremendous insight into what it takes to ensure that a student represents themselves as well as possible as they go through the application process.

GMAT

I have earned five 770+ scores over the last two years, and built a library of over 2500 GMAT questions. I have also tied first in the Economist's Brightest Minds MBA Scholarship Competition (a global competition for a $25,000 grand prize awarded based on performance on the Economist magazine's GMAT simulator). I know the GMAT and, having worked as a management consultant and advised numerous students applying to MBA programs, I am sensitive to the concerns of aspiring MBAs.

GRE

I've consistently scored in the top 1% on the GRE and have earned perfect scores on both the Verbal and Quantitative sections. I first sat the GRE in 2001 and since then I have accumulated over 13 years of teaching experience: I have taught community college students in Queens, college students in Manhattan and Westchester County, and fellow doctoral candidates at Columbia University. Together, we will build your vocabulary, review forgotten math skills, and develop strategies for writing polished, effective essays in the allotted time.

LSAT

The LSAT is both an analytical and endurance challenge and I am particularly enthusiastic about helping students beat the LSAT. With a 178 LSAT score and more than 13 years of coaching, teaching and mentoring experience, I am uniquely qualified to help aspiring law students beat the LSAT.
