About Ella

For over ten years, I have tutored students in a variety of subjects, focusing primarily on writing, French, computer skills, theatre, and public speaking. I am a patient, detailed, and energetic instructor. I teach my students how to more clearly communicate their needs and be active in their own learning process. I believe that our greatest obstacles can be overcome through hard work and determination, and I work to change students' attitudes about the subjects that challenge them.

I have worked professionally as a literary consultant, using my skills as a proofreader and editor to publish a quarterly magazine and help develop a non-fiction book. I received an 800 on the SAT II Writing Subject Test, and a score of 5 on the AP English Language and AP English Literature and Composition exams.

I earned my Bachelor's degree from University of California, Berkeley, where I was named a Regents' and Chancellor's Scholar, in just two years. I recently graduated from NYU, where I was a fellowship and scholarship recipient as well as a student leader.

I hope we work together soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Film

I worked for three years as the assistant to Academy Award-winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler. I had the opportunity to meet other acclaimed directors (such as John Sayles) and to work firsthand with Mr. Wexler while new work was being shot and edited. I have also worked on set as a production assistant.

I do not profess to be an expert in film theory or film production, but would be useful to someone who needed help analyzing story elements and themes present in particular films or different auteurs.

Public Speaking

I am a trained director and have worked in that capacity since 2008. Additionally, in my former job as a personal assistant, I often rehearsed my employer as he prepared for high-profile public speaking engagements. When coaching, I focus on helping my clients maintain an authentic connection to their message and cultivate a strong belief in their ability to communicate clearly and powerfully.

Songwriting

I received a scholarship to complete the NYU/Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, the only MFA program of its kind worldwide. I can teach song forms (AABA, ABAB, Verse-Chorus, Rondo, etc.) and offer advice on how to tell a dramatic and engaging story through words and music. Please note that I approach all critique from a textual rather than musical perspective.

Theater

I am currently a scholarship and fellowship recipient at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where I am immersed in graduate-level studies focused on the art of musical theatre writing. I have worked as a writer, director and actor, and am experienced at offering helpful, direct critique. My undergraduate degree is a B.A. in Theatre and Performance Studies, obtained after only two years of study at UC Berkeley.

Writing

I hold an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing and have professional experience as the full-time managing editor of a quarterly arts publication. In high school, I scored an 800 on the SAT II Writing subject test. I can help students see the importance of the details as well as the big picture, and I lead them to success by teaching them how to use the same study habits and revision practices I have employed for over a decade.
