About Michele

At UCLA, where I majored in English, minored in French, and did graduate work in Education, I received a fine education. I've been teaching ever since, Grades Pre-K through7 and am very adept at communicating with my students and clarifying things, from their point of view as learners. In addition to NYC private schools, I've also taught at a Charter School. Also, I have always tutored privately, English and French to both individuals and small groups: preschooler playgroups, Lower School kids for enrichment and support, secondary school and college students struggling to improve their grades, and senior citizens desirous of brushing up on their second language and conversing in a relaxed setting.

Depending on the age, personality, level, and needs of my students, I regularly supplement my lessons with posters, flashcards, video, music, grammar chants, card games, board games, toys, dolls/dollhouse, and many more materials. Over the course of my career, I have created many worksheets--word games and puzzles, exercises, and quizzes--and urge my students do some of them at home so they can progress more rapidly. My students and their parents have consistently been very pleased with my work. I greatly enjoy working one-on-one with students to troubleshoot and help them regain their confidence in their reading and writing, or just to practice speaking and enjoy their increasing fluency.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

After majoring in English and minoring in French at UCLA, I did my graduate work to obtain K-12 teacher certification, both in California and New York. After moving back to New York from Brussels, Belgium, where I taught ESL for 4 years, I did the same at the 92nd Street Y and, most recently, at a French-American Charter School.

I spent most of my career teaching French to Grades Pre-K through 7, in 3 Manhattan private schools.
In addition, I was a 5th grade Homeroom Teacher and Advisor at one of the schools, so part of my job was to help my Advisees with their study skills, sometimes serving as a "Homework Helper."

After school and on weekends, I have always tutored privately, both adults and children, individually or in small groups, such as Pre-School playgroups, and Elementary School kids struggling to improve their grades or whose families want language enrichment for them. Depending on the age, personality, and needs of my tutees, I regularly supplement lessons with posters, flashcards, music, grammar chants, card games, board games, toys, and dolls/dollhouse.

Over the course of my career, I have created many worksheets--word games and puzzles, exercises, and quizzes--and urge my students to do some of them at home so they can progress more rapidly. My students and their parents have consistently been very pleased with my work. I greatly enjoy working one-on-one with students to troubleshoot and help them regain their confidence, whether in their native or second language, or in another subject that they are struggling with at school.

French

At UCLA, where I majored in English, minored in French, and did graduate work in Education, I received a fine education. But it was the 5 years I spent living in Francophone countries--France for 1 year as a UCLA Undergraduate, and Belgium for 4 years as an ESL teacher--that have best qualified me to be both a French and an ESL/ESOL teacher/tutor. The fact that I teach both English and French as Second Languages, and lived abroad for so long, makes me particularly well-suited to tutor, because I completely understand the grammar and idiosyncrasies of both languages, as well as the challenges of being a second language learner. I am, thus, very adept at communicating with my students and clarifying things, from their point of view as learners.

Since moving back to NYC from Brussels, I have taught French in 3 Manhattan private schools and a DOE Charter School in West Harlem [NY French-American Charter School]. In addition, I have always tutored privately, English and French to individuals and small groups: preschooler playgroups, Elementary School kids for enrichment and support getting off to a good start in French, Secondary School and College students struggling to improve their grades, and Senior Citizens desirous of brushing up on their second language and conversing in a relaxed setting.

Depending on the age, personality, level, and needs of my students, I regularly supplement my lessons with posters, flashcards, video, music, grammar chants, card games, board games, and toys. Over the course of my career, I have created many worksheets--word games and puzzles, exercises, and quizzes--and urge my students do some of them at home so they can progress more rapidly. My students [and their parents] have consistently been very pleased with my work. I greatly enjoy working one-on-one with students to troubleshoot and help them regain their confidence in their reading and writing, or just to practice speaking and enjoy their increasing fluency.

Reading

At UCLA, where I majored in English, minored in French, and did graduate work in Education, I received a fine education. I am very adept at communicating with my students and clarifying things, from their point of view as learners. Reading comprehension is my specialty.

My English positions have been at the 92nd Street Y and, from 2010-2014, at NYFACS, a DOE Charter School in West Harlem [NY French-American Charter School]. I earned N-12 certification in French and English and hold a special TESOL Certificate from Columbia University, Teachers College. In addition, I have always tutored privately, English and French to both individuals and small groups: preschooler playgroups, Lower School kids for enrichment, secondary school and college students struggling to improve their grades, and senior citizens desirous of brushing up on their second language and conversing in a relaxed setting.

Depending on the age, personality, level, and needs of my students, I regularly supplement my lessons with posters, flashcards, video, music, grammar chants, card games, board games, toys, dolls/dollhouse, and many more materials. I greatly enjoy working one-on-one with students to troubleshoot and help them regain their confidence, or just to practice speaking and enjoy their increasing fluency.

Study Skills

I am a highly organized person who has succeeded in helping my French students, as well as my 5th Grade Advisees, to organize their materials, plan-books, time, and minds to produce better results with less stress and anxiety. My primary strategy is to help them see the big picture in order to plan ahead for the long term, in short increments with very specific goals. Essential tools are multi-colored highlighters and index cards, which I encourage the kids to use for a variety of purposes. Perhaps most important is the reading response tactic called SQ3R: Survey, Question, Read/Write/Review. I get great satisfaction from watching my students gradually develop the work habits essential to success in their various subjects.

Writing

After majoring in English and minoring in French at UCLA, I did my graduate work to obtain K-12 teacher certification, both in California and New York. After moving back to New York from Brussels, Belgium, where I taught ESL for 4 years, I did the same at the 92nd Street Y and, most recently, at a French-American Charter School. A large part of the curriculum for my older students was developing their essay-writing skills.
