I have always had a passion for learning, and for sharing my knowledge with others. Growing up in a very diverse classroom in New York City, it became apparent to me that each person learns and perceives information differently. One teacher may explain the same concept, equation or theory in a way which makes sense to some students, while further confusing other students. My goal in tutoring is to break down the barrier between teaching and understanding. With every student, I aim to identify methods that work best to cater to each student's personal learning needs. This may include visual aids, repetition, breaking something larger down into more manageable pieces, or simply explaining an idea in a different way that appeals more to the student's way of understanding. I am constantly using my creativity to develop new ways to teach the same old things. I enjoy working with students of all ages, and will push your student to excel, while giving the tricks, techniques, knowledge and understanding to do so.
I have been working with kids for almost 10 years now, in various outlets including tutoring, babysitting, working as a summer camp counselor, and working in a children's hospital. Interning in the Child Life Program at Mount Sinai's Kravis Children's Hospital taught me to work with many differently-abled children ages 3 to 21 and allowed me to develop many techniques of approaching communication with children to foster and maximize learning and understanding. I also have extensive experience tutoring elementary, middle and high school math, science, English and writing classes. I can tutor for many AP exams, as I excelled at AP English, AP Calculus, AP Biology and AP Psychology. I graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelors of Science in Biology and Marine Science, as well as minors in Chemistry and Psychology, and am well versed in all of the scientific and mathematical pre-requisites that accompany those majors. Recently, I graduated from Stony Brook University with a Masters in Marine Conservation and Policy.
I look forward to teaching your students, and bridging the gap between the teacher and the material to allow complete understanding and maximize success in the classroom! Alexandra was on time and had a good grasp of the material to be included in my son's test this week. He worked well with Alexandra and was very pleased and confident for his exam. We will not hesitate to use Alexandra's services again when the need arises. Thank you.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
