About Toren

Dear parents and students,

I'm a full-time SAT and physics tutor with a love of teaching and helping students realize their intellectual ability.

Many of my SAT students have improved their score by 200 - 300 points; most physics students have improved their grades by a whole letter grade. I have been tutoring for a year and also currently teach SAT and Regents/Common Core test classes at a private school in Manhattan.

I graduated Cornell University with a degree in Materials Science and Engineering, where I did research on polymer physics and received A's in my college physics and math courses. Before college, I received the prize for top mathematics student in my high school and scored 780 on both the SAT verbal and math sections.

As a student, I was familiar with an intense math and science workload myself and came to appreciate how critical it is to have a teacher who is able to accomplish two main things: match their teaching style to a student's unique learning process and help make abstract formulas more intuitively understandable and concrete. As a teacher, I pride myself on being able to achieve both of these.

In addition to building skills, however, I strongly believe confidence is a key part of successful intellectual development. I try to use instances in lessons where a student gets a question right or understands a formula in order to encourage them and build confidence in their own thinking process. I have found that this makes students more invested in their own success and makes them better overall learners.

SAT tutoring:
I understand how overwhelming taking the SAT can be. In my lessons, I focus on breaking the test taking process into smaller, manageable parts, and teach proven, Kaplan-adapted tactics specific to each of the various SAT question types.

I have taught students with a variety of learning styles including those with processing issues. I try my best to identify problematic patterns of thinking, such as thinking too much "outside the box", or not basing answer choices on evidence provided in the test.

I also use diagnostic tests or previous results to understand why and in what areas students are getting problems wrong.

Physics tutoring:
I have a love of physics and enjoy explaining concepts/laws and how the formulas that encapsulate these laws relate to the physical world. It is truly rewarding when a frustrated student is finally able to solve a challenging problem.

In my lessons, I practice a "hands off" approach to the degree possible, asking appropriate questions and providing an explanation/walk through of a problem when necessary. My overall goal here as well is to help students build ownership of their own analytical abilities.

Logistics:
I offer lessons every day of the week and can travel to most areas in the city. I also offer online sessions for those unable to meet.

Please contact me with any questions or to speak further. I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
Toren

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SAT Math

I have been tutoring the SAT and Regents for over a year. Students' scores typically increase 200 - 300 points.

SAT Reading

I have been tutoring the SAT and Regents for over a year. Most of my students' scores have increased 200 - 300 points.
