About Toren

Dear parents and students,

I'm a full-time SAT and physics tutor with a love of teaching and helping students realize their intellectual ability.

Many of my SAT students have improved their score by 200 - 300 points; most physics students have improved their grades by a whole letter grade. I have been tutoring for a year and also currently teach SAT and Regents/Common Core test classes at a private school in Manhattan.

I graduated Cornell University with a degree in Materials Science and Engineering, where I did research on polymer physics and the use of hydrogels in a novel anti-obesity medical device. Prior to college, I received the prize for top mathematics student in my high school. I scored 780 on both the SAT verbal and math sections and received A's in my college physics and math classes.

As a student, I was familiar with an intense math and science workload myself and came to appreciate how critical it is to have a teacher who is able to accomplish two main things: match their teaching style to a student's unique learning process and help make abstract formulas more intuitively understandable and concrete. As a teacher, I pride myself on being able to achieve both of these.

SAT tutoring:
Taking the SAT can be a daunting experience. I focus on breaking the test prep and test taking process into smaller manageable parts, giving you the tools identify and succeed on each of the various SAT question types.

At the beginning of our sessions I have students take a diagnostic test to identify where their weaknesses lie. This also usually gives me insight into why students are getting particular problems wrong and how to best focus our time.

Our lessons concentrate on: filling in gaps in any basic SAT subject matter such as grammar, algebra or trigonometry, being able to identify question types and use appropriate problem-solving techniques for each type (I use some strategies from the Kaplan method and some I have developed myself).
Overall, I pride myself on being patient, providing intuitive explanations of concepts and catering to students' individual learning processes.

Physics tutoring:
In my lessons, I practice a "hands off" approach to the degree possible, asking appropriate questions and providing an explanation/walk through of a problem when necessary. My overall goal is to help students build self confidence and realize their own intellectual potential.

I find the learning process fascinating and enjoy explaining physics concepts/laws and how the formulas that encapsulate these laws relate to the physical world. It is truly rewarding when a frustrated student is finally able to solve a challenging problem.

Logistics:
My rate is $60/hour or $80 for a 1.5 hour session. I have found the 1.5 hour session to be the optimal length; it gives us enough time to be productive but doesn't strain the student's focus. I offer lessons every day of the week and can travel to most areas in the city. I also offer online sessions for those unable to meet.

Please contact me with any questions you have. I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
Toren

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SAT Reading

Have been tutoring the SAT and Regents for over a year.
Most of my students scores have increased 200 - 300 points.
