Hello, my name is Richard. I graduated with a Master's in Diplomacy and International Affairs from Norwich University and I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and Minor in Psychology from Florida International University. My area of expertise is in the social sciences, as well as teaching English to speakers of other languages. I also enjoy tutoring in reading, writing, grammar and proofreading. I have a passion for teaching and making a difference in the lives of others, young and old alike. I am fluent in English and Spanish, and I am also proficient in French.
I enjoy being a part of the learning process and understand that all of us learn differently. There isn't just one way of learning and a tutor should always be able to adapt to those different methods. When I begin to work with a student, I analyze his/her strengths and weaknesses and create an individual academic plan tailored to that student. I believe in the participation of the student and/or family members (if minors) so that everyone can be a part of the eventual success he/she can gain from our academic interaction.
Although I have a career, I enjoy tutoring because I like to help others reach their full potential. I believe in creating an individualized plan for each person and if technology is how you learn better or is more convenient for you, then we can definitely incorporate that into the mix.
I'm excited to work with you, so let's do this! Hello, my name is Richard. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught English to speakers of other languages for many years. As someone who immigrated to the United States at a very young age, I know what it feels like to have to learn another language and to learn to live within a different culture. My greatest ally and friend since elementary school was my ESOL teacher and I will forever be grateful to her. I believe in teaching ESL using the immersion technique and enjoy using visual aides, music, movies and technology in order for my students to truly grasp and master the English language.
As part of my undergraduate and graduate studies, I took many courses in government, politics, international relations, international political economy, etc. Both my Bachelors and Masters degrees were in areas directly related to government and politics, both domestic and international. Government and politics has been my subject of expertise for over 10 years.
I constantly write due to the career field I'm in, and one of my main duties is to proofread what others have written as well. I have been proofreading for many years and it is something I enjoy tremendously. Some of the works I have proofread include essays, textbooks (prior to publishing), journal articles, short stories, and more.
I am an avid reader. I like to read all types of literature ranging from fiction to peer-reviewed scientific journals. I believe there is nothing better for the human brain and imagination than a book that can take you to a multitude of places in your mind. The same concept applies to literature that informs and trains in different areas of life.
While in college, I took various courses in World Religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, etc.). Furthermore, I am an avid reader and student of religion for academic purposes. I have also studied at length various other "alternative" and less-known religious philosophies, such as Theosophy.
Spanish is my native language and I can therefore speak and write it perfectly. As someone who immigrated to the United States at a very young age, I know what it feels like to have to learn another language and to learn to live within a different culture. If you need help speaking, writing, reading or pronouncing in Spanish, I would be glad to help you.
