City College of New York (Physics)
I am a math, science, and technology tutor with a high rate of success in improving my students' academic performance. I have a fresh, reliable approach to math and science education, based on identifying individual strengths and weaknesses and tailoring custom programs that make these concepts accessible.
I have a degree in physics and I also work as a traffic control systems engineer. I have tutored high-school and undergrad physics, chemistry, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, GRE Math, and the SAT subject test in physics.
From a former student:
"During the beginning of my sophomore year I had been struggling a lot in precalculus. My number one issue in class was getting used to my teachers teaching skills. I was incapable of learning her way and desperately wanted to transfer out of the class. However, Ben had given me the motivation to keep trying. I was very comfortable with Ben's ways of teaching. He was very clear and I was actually able to learn. I look forward to working with him again. Thanks Ben!" Benjamin tutored my son over the summer to prepare him for higher level math courses that he will be taking in college this fall. Benjamin was prompt, courteous, and easy to contact by phone and email. Benjamin evaluated my son's needs in the beginning session, and found out what my son's math weaknesses were. He devised an individualized program for him, with great results! My son would come to me after tutoring sessions and say, "I didn't understand these concepts before, but he explained it so well, I am good at it now!" He was very patient with my son, and provided homework after each session. The last week of tutoring, Benjamin reviewed the concepts taught to solidify my son's learning. After 8 weeks of tutoring, my son is ready for his math classes this year. I can't say enough good things about Benjamin. He knows his subject matter, and is able to teach mathematical concepts in a way that is easily understood by students.
Update 1/17/15 Benjamin was instrumental in helping my son succeed in Mathematics during the Fall 2014 semester. His math grades have gone from C's to B's-A's!! During the holiday break Benjamin continued to work with my son to prepare him for Precalculus. He is a very organized knowledgeable teacher, and knows exactly what a students needs to prepare for the next level of study. I would highly recommend Benjamin as a tutor!
Ben has tutored our son for math and science. His method was excellent, he was patient and understanding and at the same time, well organized and structured. He was also very helpful in teaching not only the material but also the necessary test-taking skills. We were very happy with our son's improvement and performance and we will definitely use Ben again if needed. We strongly recommend him as a tutor.
When looking for a tutor, there are a few factors to consider: arriving on time, ability to convey the information, patience, and others. Ben was really excellent in all these areas. I highly recommend him as a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have had many clients take Algebra 2 with me and I have consistently helped these students improve their performance. This subject reinforces and builds on concepts introduced early in algebra, and forms a basis for further study in various topics in math. Getting students to develop their ability to think about and use higher levels of abstractions in math is key, and a second course in algebra is an important part of that process.
Chemistry is among my most tutored subjects. Some students find the ideas in this course difficult, but my fresh approach to the material makes it accessible to all types of learners. Usually this is the third science course students take at the high-school level, and it presents ideas that are somewhat more abstract than those to which students are accustomed. My techniques not only consistently improve scores on the regents exam, but I also focus on general study techniques and problem solving skills for science that stay with the student for the entirety of their academic career.
I have taught several students in Geometry and I have a solid record of improving grades in this subject. This course is essential in developing a student's ability to learn and do math in the long term because it is usually the first place students become familiar with the concepts and techniques of mathematical proofs. Success at this level is part of building a strong foundation for future study in mathematics.
I have a B.S. in Physics from City College of New York. During my time at CCNY I volunteered in the Physics department's tutoring center, helping freshman and sophomore students with physics and mathematics courses. I have excelled in the subject since high school and enjoy making it accessible to others.
Precalculus is easily my most frequently tutored subject. The course incorporates some fundamental ideas and relationships that form a basis for continued study in higher levels of mathematics, not just calculus. Because of the cumulative nature of how math at this level is taught, it is essential to develop a strong foundation with precalculus.
In high school I excelled in these topics and built upon them as a math minor in college. My approach in teaching precalculus is not only effective in improving performance in this class, but it also provides math-specific study techniques that can be helpful throughout the student's academic career in mathematics.
Many of the subjects I teach at the high-school level are within the framework of a regents curriculum. In many cases the expectations are relatively well defined and the assessments rather predictable. With the implementation of the common core in New York, standards and assessments are changing and educators are transforming their lessons accordingly. My methods have helped students achieve success in both the old and new formats.
SAT Math is a popular subject among students that seek tutoring because, for better or for worse, a lot rides on a student's SAT score. I have taught many SAT math students over the years and I have a high success rate in improving scores. My approach makes the material accessible to both students who have excelled in math, and those who have struggled.
A strong foundation in trigonometry is a prerequisite to success in the study of any branch of science, mathematics, technology or engineering. Students learn important concepts about periodic functions and identities that become essential at higher levels of study. I have an excellent record of helping students who have struggled with the classroom presentation of trigonometry, giving them a different perspective on these important concepts.
