Connecticut College (German, Philosophy)
My name is Michael S. I am a native German speaker who strongly believes in both education and self-education. Learning and knowing how to learn are truly valuable keys that will empower you and open the doors that lead to a happy and fulfilling life. It is my mission to help you succeed in whatever goals you may have when it comes to the German language.
With me, you can:
1) Learn and improve your German (grammar, reading, writing and speaking) even if you're a complete beginner!
2) Practice your German conversation skills with a native speaker.
3) Experience cultural immersion through exposure to German arts and media.
4) Discover how to learn.
After I evaluate your current abilities and we discuss what your objectives are, we can decide how you want to proceed. The lessons can be as slow and relaxed or as intense and difficult as you'd like. I will work with whatever it is you want out of each lesson and am also happy to give you my own input on how we should approach your goals. In case you are at a complete loss as to how you want to proceed, I have learning materials and lesson plans that we can use as well.
Below is a little background about myself:
In addition to speaking German at home and my yearly visits to see relatives in Austria, I have been studying German academically from grade 1 onward.
In college, I double majored in German and Philosophy. In German, the topics I studied include the following: The German Enlightenment into German Romanticism, Terrorism in Germany: Red Army Faction, Adolescents in Contemporary Germany, Austria in Text and Film, Vienna Past and Present.
Furthermore, I was rated as speaking German at the level of “Advanced High” after taking the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Oral Proficiency Exam for German (upon request, I am happy to send you a copy of this certificate as proof).
After graduating Magna Cum Laude with honors in German and Philosophy, I lived in Dresden, Germany for 9 months on a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship.
I love German and I will always be making an effort to learn more about it and expand my language capabilities so as to provide you with the best service possible.
Contact me today so we can schedule your first lesson! I look forward to meeting you. Hello!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken drum lessons throughout middle school, high school and college. Throughout middle school and high school I played in the school orchestra and percussion ensemble as well as rock bands outside of school. In college I played in various rock bands as well as the college New Music Percussion Ensemble. During my Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Dresden, Germany from 2011-2012, I taught weekly, after school, group drum lessons. In addition to the twelve plus years of drums, which include learning, playing and teaching experience, I am currently still playing the drums as well as writing my own music. Finally, I have suffered and successfully recovered from drumming related injuries in the past. This helped me gain valuable (though not necessarily pleasant) experience and knowledge in how drumming related injuries occur, the measures one can take to best prevent them from happening and how one can treat and recover from these injuries. So, in addition to being qualified to teach drums, I will ground all of my lessons in the general principles safe drumming, which is invaluable information if one wants longevity and happiness playing the drums.
In college, one of my majors was German. The topics I studied include the following: The German Enlightenment into German Romanticism, Terrorism in Germany: Red Army Faction, Adolescents in Contemporary Germany, Austria in Text and Film, Vienna Past and Present. Furthermore, I was rated as speaking German at the level of “Advanced High” after taking the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Oral Proficiency Exam for German. Finally, in the summer of 2012 I completed a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship, where I spent 9 months in Dresden, Germany.
In addition to English, German is my mother tongue. Therefore I am best suited to help students at the more intermediate to advanced level of German who want to improve their speaking and reading skills. Depending on the level and willingness of the student, I can teach lessons in which the only language spoken is German. During tutoring sessions I can work on pronunciation, conversation and reading comprehension with students. Furthermore, I am also very familiar with German films, music and literature. I can bring these materials to lessons, since they are valuable aids for becoming familiar with German culture and thus for gaining a better understanding of the German language.
