Yale University (History)
Hello! I am a writing tutor specializing in class papers, standardized tests (SAT/ACT/GRE verbal and writing sections), and college preparation.
My teaching strategy marries a strong commitment to fundamental skills, including grammar and composition, with a cultivation of the student's creativity and personal expression. I hope to foster a love of reading and writing and equip students with the skills they need to express themselves effectively, confidently, and uniquely. My ultimate goal is that the student gain independence, and to that end I place considerable emphasis on study skills and personal accountability.
I have a particular fondness for test prep and for helping students through the college application process. It is such an exciting and overwhelming time in a student's life and I enjoy empowering students to put their best foot forward as they pursue their dreams. I believe that no single test prep strategy works for everyone. Instead, I seek to collaborate with my students to define the strategies that work best for them and ensure that they are testing according to their highest potential. And the more fun we can have as well do so, the better!
Currently, I am pursuing a PhD in theater history at CUNY. I hold an MFA in acting from NYU (ham alert!) and a BA in History from Yale University. I have tutored in NYC for over 5 years, and have taught students from the 5th grade through the graduate level. In addition, I have considerable classroom experience teaching test prep as well as ESL (experience which I have found quite handy as I teach grammar and writing). I have a very high success rate in both standardized test scores and college admissions (references available upon request).

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
