About Daniel

My name is Daniel, and I am currently offering tutoring services. I taught humanities and English, full-time, at both middle and high school (the latter, a school devoted to film and television production and studies) for eleven years, and have been a private tutor during that time. (I hold a current New York State Certification in English/Language Arts (Grades 7-12), and two master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania: one in secondary education in English, the other in English, Comparative Literature and Theatre). My primary clientele is pre-teens and teens between ages 12 and 18, and my areas of expertise include:

•Test Prep (SHSAT, PSAT, SAT (verbal, math & writing); SAT II English lit; ACT; GRE); and
•English lit (all genres), writing (creative and expository/essay)

My rate reflects a "two hours for the price of one" system. I give my clients homework assignments with due dates, and they email them to me between our sessions. Before the next session, I spend an extra hour alone evaluating the student's homework. That way, I see patterns of strengths and areas to be improved, which sets the agenda for our next session; no time or money is wasted on the student sitting there writing or taking a test while I'm just sitting there. That is, we always work together.

Through individualized attention, my aim for students is to have them to take ownership of their material. I help them empower themselves to be confident that they know how attack their tests or assignments. Additionally, I help students analyze and master literature, and command their writing assignments and growth, all through diagnosing their learning styles and developing their critical thinking skills.

Note: I always come to the student's home, and require a parent or guardian to be on the premises throughout the entire session.

Please contact me for further information regarding my teaching style, student responsibilities, rates, etc. If you would like to get in touch with me, please feel free through WyzAnt.

Impeccable references available upon request.

I look forward to working with you!

Best,
Daniel

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT is a part of my tutoring repertoire, especially as more colleges and universities are accepting them. As there are similarities between the ACT English section and the SAT Reading and Writing sections, the ACT English relies a bit more heavily on fundamentals. As an English teacher, this was a staple of my curriculum. I have tutored students in the ACT, and their grasp of fundamental material made their other English applications stronger.

ACT Reading

I taught English for three years, am certified in New York State for English/Language Arts Grades 7-12, and have tutored Test Preps and English subjects (Literature and all types of writing).

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught Theatre, Literature and Writing at a middle school (Grades 6-8) in NYC. There, I worked most intensively with 6th Graders vis-a-vis their writing and reading skills, within a critical thinking framework. Through theatrical and Humanities-based literature, I developed and taught cross-curricular lessons and units designed to strengthen their verbal and written skills.

English

I am a former high school classroom teacher with ten years experience who taught English Literature and Writing (Expository, Argumentative, and Creative). Additionally, I taught filmmaking, screenwriting, and dramatic literature. I hold two degrees from the University of Pennsylvania; the first being a Master's in Secondary Education in English, the second being a Master's in English, Comparative Literature and Theater.

Film

I taught film and video production at a New York City public high school with a focus on the TV and Film industry. As someone who is a member of that community professionally, I can empower students to master the basics of filmmaking, such as the storytelling power of basic camera technique (shot size, shot composition, angle, etc.) and editing, both narrative and documentary.

Grammar

It goes without saying that a strong mastery of grammar takes the writer and reader far not just in terms of successful test-taking, but more importantly, critical thought. These were my goals and responsibilities as an English and Writing (Creative and Expository). I have tutored numerous students in grammar through their writing, so their tutelage became twofold.

Literature

I was an English, Comparative Literature, and Theatre major in one of my graduate programs at the University of Pennsylvania. My focus was on Modernism, yet I also studied older (Romantic and Classical) genres.

PSAT

In addition to my having taught English Literature and Writing for seven years, I have been tutoring test prep for eleven years, two of which were during my time in my English, Comparative Literature and Theatre program in Graduate School (University of Pennsylvania). I did daily PSAT and SAT workshops with my classroom students during our advisory periods at my last school.

Reading

I am a former high school classroom teacher with ten years experience who taught English Literature and Writing (Expository, Argumentative, and Creative). Additionally, I taught filmmaking, screenwriting, and dramatic literature. I hold two degrees from the University of Pennsylvania; the first being a Master's in Secondary Education in English, the second being a Master's in English, Comparative Literature and Theater.

SAT Reading

I taught English for three years, am certified in New York State for English/Language Arts Grades 7-12, and have tutored Test Preps and English subjects (Literature and all types of writing).

SAT Writing

I taught English for three years, am certified in New York State for English/Language Arts Grades 7-12, and have tutored Test Preps and English subjects (literature and all types of writing) very successfully for approximately ten years. I have impeccable references from parents, and am happy to discuss your child's learning needs and styles to craft perfect lessons for his/her growth.

SSAT

As the SSAT is designed similarly to the SAT and ACT using Verbal, Writing, and Math, it is not an uncommon exam. Students applying to PRIVATE or INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS must take this. Its similarity to the SAT and ACT lies not in the measurement of what the student has learned in the classroom, but that of the student's ability to take the test.

As an accomplished SAT/ACT tutor, this similarity allows me to apply similar techniques suited to the test taker.

For more information, feel free to stop by my page and read my bio; should you have any questions, by all means, feel free to contact me via WyzAnt!

Theatre

I have worked as an actor intermittently for fourteen years. (I didn't take as many jobs when I taught full-time.) I was trained under George DiCenzo in Master Class for nine years, and have additional training from Yale Drama School. I continue to work in the industry in all media, and as a voiceover artist.

I have been a private acting coach for many years, with my main clientele being eighth and ninth grade students applying to the Drama programs in the New York City Performing Arts High Schools.

Video Production

I taught film and video production at a New York City public high school with a focus on the TV and Film industry. As someone who is a member of that community professionally, I can empower students to master the basics of filmmaking, such as the storytelling power of basic camera technique (shot size, shot composition, angle, etc.) and editing, both narrative and documentary.

Vocabulary

I am a former high school classroom teacher with ten years experience who taught English Literature and Writing (Expository, Argumentative, and Creative). Writing requires the proper use and context of vocabulary, as well as maintaining and increasing its strength. I use various techniques based on the student's learning to master and control vocabulary growth. Additionally, I taught filmmaking, screenwriting, and dramatic literature. I hold two degrees from the University of Pennsylvania; the first being a Master's in Secondary Education in English, the second being a Master's in English, Comparative Literature and Theater.

Writing

I taught English/Dramatic Literature and Writing (both Creative and Expository) for eight years, six within the NYCDOE. I have a Professional-level New York State Teaching Certificate for Grades 7-12 in English/Language Arts.

Moreover, I tutor SAT English and Writing, and help the student master and keep a successful approach to essay writing, and own his/her means of properly attacking an essay prompt per their learning styles.
