I am a Graduate Student of The City College of New York conducting my thesis research at the American Museum of Natural History. I have lots of experience working with students, both as a substitute teacher and one-on-one tutoring settings. I have a passion for learning, and get excited about any type of school work, especially math and science-related topics. I have always been inspired by mentors who share their enthusiasm for academia with their students, and I aim to emulate these sentiments within my own teaching experiences.
My methods are not set in stone; throughout my experiences, I have learned that different teaching styles work for different students. However, most students generally benefit significantly from visual and applied methods of learning. Tying real-world applications to subject matter helps students understand seemingly abstract concepts, and see the significance of why they should understand it in the first place.
I have been brushing up on my SAT subject matter and learning methods, but I feel comfortable working with age ranges from kindergarten to undergraduate. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took 5 semesters of chemistry during my undergrad (General Chemistry 1 & 2, Organic Chemistry 1 & 2, and Biochemistry). I am currently tutoring a high school sophomore in chemistry, with much success!
I have been playing baseball since age 5, but began playing competitive fastpitch in 6th grade. I was a starting varsity player all four years in high school, and received multiple honors and all-star nominations during this time. In 2004, I was recognized with the 5th best batting average in the state of Massachusetts. Although I chose to play volleyball in college, I was recruited by many universities, and even filled in as a temporary team member at Florida Institute of Technology in 2008.
I have been playing volleyball since age 11. I worked as an instructor at volleyball summer camp in high school, was inducted into the Massachusetts State All-Star Team in 2004, and received an NCAA scholarship to play competitively at Florida Institute of Technology from 2005 to 2009.
