About Dr. Sandra

I earned my Ph.D. from Wayne State University and have worked in multiple academic settings. I earned a 3.9+ GPA throughout my eight-year college career and will show you or your son/daughter how to achieve the same. Students, regardless of past difficulties, handicaps, or learning disabilities, are capable of excelling in their coursework when taught in a systematic, step-by-step fashion that takes into account their learning styles and how their minds absorbs information. I've worked with the toughest of cases, and I've yet to encounter a student who isn't capable of achieving academic excellence.

For Kindergarten through Ph.D. students who need help with spelling, vocabulary, phonics, reading, and writing, I offer comprehensive tutoring in all areas of English. I was a writing mentor for undergraduate BSW and graduate MSW students at the School of Social Work at Wayne State University, and I previously served as a Doctoral Dissertation Committee Member for several Ph.D. candidates at NCU. So whether you are a parent with a child in elementary school who needs to learn Phonics or a Ph.D. Candidate yourself, I help my students master the English Language. For my Masters/ABD Students, I teach you step-by-step how to craft well-thought out theses and dissertations, earning your degree for once and for all.

Life Coaching Sessions

If you or your son/daughter can't concentrate, appears worried, or under lots of stress, I can help. If you are struggling to get your son/daughter to open up and communicate about what is going on in their lives, I can help.

I build a strong rapport with every client I work with, and when parents, educators, and other professionals can't get through, I often can. Because I am much closer to their age, children, teenagers, and college students find themselves easily relating to me. Because I am not the "authoritative parent," who "punishes, blames, and gets mad," students tell me the truth. And because I am not there to judge, I often can get students to do what their parents can't. And what that means is: doing their schoolwork, hanging out with the right crowd, and making decisions that take care of their body, heart, and spirit.

Students learn to trust themselves, rely less on the approval of others, not worry so much about being popular, and develop a clear mind enabling them to focus on what matters most: their education and dreams. And as a parent, you can rest assured, I will make it the "cool" thing to be smart, excel in their coursework, and make the right decisions.

After a few sessions with me, parents have noted that their son/daughter felt happier, were less worried, and more motivated than ever to achieve success in their academics and make better decisions in life in general. The first session comes with a free diagnostic assessment for the parent and student. The assessment provides a crucial roadmap for future success.

I hold my students to the highest degree of excellence in honoring their commitments to their school work. I look forward to working with you and your family.

Best Regards

Dr. Sandra

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Start earning top scores on the ACT English. Step by step, I will teach you how to ace the ACT Writing!

ADHD

Having worked with many students with ADD/ADHD over the past nine years, I create structured activities to keep my student's attention on the subject at hand. We often work in a calm, quiet environment where there is very little outer distraction. When my student sometimes wanders off, I gentle steer them back to the subject at hand. To stay organized, we use daily planners and charts.

Algebra 1

Step by step, I teach students how to master Algebra 1!

Dyslexia

I have had the privilege to work with many students with Dyslexia over the past five years, employing the Orton-Gillingham principles. A multisensory approach to learning works wonders for my students with Dyslexia (e.g. touching, seeing, hearing, ect…). I offer animated demonstrations, decodable text passages, and the use of real objects to make the process of learning possible, because students faced with Dyslexia often have to “experience” the material at a much deeper level than a student without it.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with elementary students (k through 6th) for the past nine years. Patient and encouraging, I help my students master all K-6th subjects including math, science, history, reading, writing, and spelling. I create structured and individualized programs that help my K through 6th students read, write, and do math at their grade level.

English

I will teach you how to start earning 100% on all your writing assignments - K through Ph.D. I have helped several students successfully earn A's on essays, read and respond papers, theses, and dissertations! Step by step, we can work on tackling your assignment!

Thanks

ISEE

I have been helping students on the Independent School Entrance Examination for the past five years. I offer comprehensive tutoring for all five sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement, and a 30-minute essay. In between sessions, students complete prep questions I design for them, and we go over questions they got wrong at the next session. I offer up-to-date prep material that helps students get ready for the test.

Phonics

I have taught phonics and reading for the past nine years. I start at the very beginning, teaching students letter/sound recognition, vowel blends, diagraphs, and other letter combinations. Teaching phonics at a very early age is important as it is the foundation of masterful reading later on in school. However, some of my students are older and never learned how to read. Whatever the age, we start where the student is at and use phonics to build the students’ reading comprehension. It is important that the things we practice during the tutoring sessions are reinforced through practice at home. With a systematic, step-by-step, phonics program my students effectively master reading, spelling, and writing.

Public Speaking

I have been tutoring students in public speaking for the past nine years. Whether giving a speech in front of your classmates, at a business meeting, or practicing for a theater performance, Forensics Speaking, or Debate Tournament, I help each student I work with excel in their public speaking and presentation. At the end of each tutoring session, students become less nervous and more confident than ever in speaking in front of others.

Sociology

I have been tutoring students in sociology for over five years. We go over concepts very carefully and I help them prepare for exams. Many of my sociology students also need help with their writing assignments ranging from the study of society, culture, social organization, to social structure, agency, identity, and ethnicity.

Special Needs

I've been working with special needs students for the past nine years. Every student is capable of achieving academic excellence regardless of their learning differences. The key is to identify the unique cognitive learning patterns of the student, and then designing learning strategies tailored to their unique ways of processing the information presented to them.

Study Skills

I have been teaching study skills to my students for the past nine years. Knowing how to study is crucial for academic success, and before any tutoring even begins, I teach students crucial study skills including filling out their daily planner, managing their time, beating procrastination, dealing with anxiety, and tips on how to study effectively. When students are equipped with proper study skills, achieving excellence is their coursework becomes possible.

Best tutor EVER!

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Sandra H about two weeks ago. I had recently been in a car crash and she allowed me the option of online tutoring. She is a very patient, down to earth person, and no point in time did I feel belittled because of my lack of knowledge. That is one of the things I loved about working with her. She returned my paper within 2 or 3 hours and explained to me what e
