Bio

Everything comes down to history for me. I've been a history geek for my my entire life (or at least since age 4, since I don't remember my life before that). My idea of fun is to read history (currently on Robert Caro's biography of Lyndon Johnson, Volume 4). I've tutored history for high school and college students for three years, I've done archival history work for the New York Historical Society and Harvard Business school, and I've read more history. Since then, I've also tutored English, and taught such odd subjects as children's theater and the board game Go.

All my tutoring experience before WyzAnt is through friend-of-a-friend links. I've never gotten a gig by being assigned by a computer (or by an agency that doesn't know me), which is why I'm on WyzAnt -- so the student and I can decide whether we're a good match. I always want to get to know my students well.

My way of teaching is simple -- I don't want to spoon-feed people answers, leaving them unable to come up with any the next time they have a paper to write. I should be helping people figure out the answers themselves. Every session with me (in history, English, theater, or Go) is me asking questions, until it switches on the light bulb in the student's head. The best tutor is one who eventually makes themselves unnecessary.

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I came to Elementary Math tutoring the old-fashioned way: learning on the job. I was originally a history and English tutor (and I still do that), but later I became a general homework helper for all subjects, including math and science. The key to teaching elementary math is to always remember what it felt like as a child, when math can seem scarier than it is.
Reading,

Reading

Most of my tutoring has been on how to write a term paper -- how to research it, how to organize it, and how to write it on a sentence by sentence level. When I tutor reading, I do the same things as when I tutor writing.

English

Most of my tutoring work has been with high school and college term papers -- English, History, and Social Studies. I teach how to write a good paper on a line by line basis. But I also teach how to organize a term paper, how to make it flow from paragraph to paragraph, and how to make it shorter without losing any content.

I double-majored in History and Creative Writing at Columbia, and have been helping high school and college students with their term papers since 2008. The term papers have been about everything from the modern New York subway system to classical theater to Chinese history.

History

American History,

American History

When I'm not tutoring history, I work as a historical research assistant. My clients include the New York Historical Society (for their "Lincoln in New York" exhibit) and a professor at Harvard Business School.
European History,

European History

For European history, I read a lot of classic history books, like C.V. Wedgwood's history of the Thirty Years War or Robert Massie's histories of Peter the Great and the Dreadnought Project. At the same time, I know that these books are not always up to date, and I try to keep up online with the latest scholarship.
Geography,

Geography

I started out as a history buff before I learned geography. It's rather difficult to learn history without picking up on geography as well. Starting with history means that you don't just learn where countries are on a map -- you also learn what geography means for people around the world. For example, why do most large empires start in river valleys, and almost none in mountains? And why are there exceptions to that, like the Incas?
Social Studies,

Social Studies

I have tutored Social Studies for High School and College students since 2008, and for Elementary School students since this year. My main background is in history, and when I teach Social Studies, I think of it as the history of current events.
World History,

World History

Besides tutoring, I work as a history research assistant (I've had clients from the New York Historical Society and Harvard Business School). I do a bit of everything -- my undergraduate senior thesis was on the Nigerian Civil War, but I'm currently doing research on Abraham Lincoln.

Insightful and very effective tutor!

Avi understands the subject extraordinarily well. He is also a super writing coach. Most importantly, he balances being encouraging with being straightforward to pull out the student's best work.

Very helpful

Avi helped me understand The Roaring 20s we learned about in a community college summer class. Avi is a great tutor because he will not waste time. We got everything that I need to finish on time. Thank you Avi.

He is better than my HIS101 professor.

His instruction is very easy to understand, and he can understand my Asian accent! The lesson was very smooth, and he helped me a lot. I would ask him for help again!!

Very knowledgeable in US History

Excellent tutor! I highly recommend Avi. He was available within a day. He is extremely knowledgeable in US History. Working on essay questions from Depression on.

Very knowledgeable

At my first lesson, we discussed the topics to be covered, the exams etc. His precise vocabulary used in teaching of the ancient empires is amazing. With his assistance I hope to do well at the exams. Glad to have him as my tutor and to recommend him to others.

Engaging, Insightful

My son does not like (correction: did not like) History but Avi found a way to engage him and see the interesting nuances and details he was missing out on. Avi knows how to translate his passion (and genius) of History into engaging conversations and notes that kept my (active, sometimes hyper) son's focus and attention. My son has a newfound appreciation of American History now and that was after just one lesson with Avi.

History savant

Avi is a history genius, it's like there is an encyclopedia in his head! He's also patient, punctual and does a great job following up post lesson ( sending an email to remind you of what you need to do).
