After a successful career as copywriter in communications and advertising, I earned my TESOL certification from UC Berkeley and now have over ten years experience helping a diverse array of students of all ages—native as well as second language learners—improve their language skills. I have taught ELA and ESL for the Department of Labor in San Francisco, in California’s Adult Ed program, and most recently at the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul. Private clients have ranged from elementary to college level as well as in the professional arena, including corporations, international diplomats and government officials. After an initial assessment in which we set goals—short or long-term—lessons are created featuring tools that underscore and address particular strengths and weaknesses. Concentration often centers around reading comprehension and writing skills—concept, structure, grammar, vocabulary—outline and first draft through final submission.
An effective tutor functions alternately as coach, mentor, advisor, and advocate. I’ve even found that my experience as an illustrator has proven surprisingly useful. Watching my clients’ growth in every aspect of English—reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and TOEFL performance—has been deeply gratifying.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
