I'm a graduate from Stony Brook University with a Masters in Math Education and Bachelors in Math. I love thinking of new ways to explain concepts and innovative ways to show it visually or with physical models. My goal is to really help a student understand the material, and understand what could potentially be holding him/her back from truly knowing and applying it. While I am open to all students, the best ones I've worked with and had the greatest potential to grow are those that truly desire to improve themselves.
I use a individualized approach because I know that one size or method does not fit all. I can adapt to different learning styles and find that there are a few things that work well to start off with. I start with a verbal assessment of the student's abilities generally and then I get specific. I do this so I can build a relationship with the student, before we dive into the challenges faced head-on which will definitely come up later. Very impressed with Adrian. On the first day, he taught my 10 year old daughter order of operations which was her first time learning this and she understood most of what was taught. They also completed a mock 7th grade placement test. Prior to his arrival Adrian also drafted and brought over 20 extra mock algebra questions which they did not get around to doing. He is very patient. Kudos to any tutor who can work with my daughter who is super figity and constantly moving around the room and playing with different objects. Drives me up the wall. But Adrian is not the least bit bothered by it.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
