Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Illustrator

I am qualified to teach and tutor students in Adobe Illustrator because I have successfully taught hundreds of students to use Adobe Illustrator over the past 12 years and many of my students have gone on to become professional artists and Illustrators. I love teaching Adobe Illustrator the most, out of all the digital media programs. Students improve their drawing, graphic design, and color skills using Illustrator. Adobe Illustrator is probably the best tool for graphic design. Adobe Illustrator is my favorite program to use in my own drawing and graphic design work.

Adobe InDesign

For the past several years, I have taught adults as well as my high school students to use InDesign as a great page layout and design tool. They have created magazine spreads, and have done many school reports and research papers using InDesign. The new Common Core standards require that students use technology for written communication; InDesign is a helpful tool towards that end. I also use InDesign for my own freelance design assignments.

Adobe Photoshop

I have taught Photoshop to hundreds of students. I especially enjoy using it in conjunction with other Adobe Creative Suite programs.

Art History

I have been certified to teach AP Art History by the College Board. I have taught AP Art History for the past 10 years. My students generally pass the AP exam with a 3 or higher. I specialize in creating graphic organizers for my students and encouraging student-created study guides. Enjoyment of a subject is not a qualification, but it should be known that I really enjoy this subject.

Art Theory

My extensive 30 year background in various media as well as in art history qualifies me to teach art theory, which includes art appreciation, color theory, design, composition, and the history of art.

Drawing

I have studied art formally since the age of 10. My undergraduate degree is in art. I also have K-12 New York State permanent certification to teach drawing and painting. I have successfully taught all aspects of drawing and painting for over 20 years.

Graphic Design

I have been a freelance graphic designer for many years, and I have taught graphic design at a specialized arts high school for may years as well. A graphic designer uses Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop. I can tutor in all of these Adobe programs as well as teach graphic design layout by explaining the principles of good design.

Painting

I have studied art formally since the age of ten. My undergraduate degree is in art. My graduate degree is in art education. I have K-12 New York State permanent certification to teach drawing and painting. I have successfully taught all aspects of drawing and painting for over 20 years to all ages. I have shown my paintings in group exhibits yearly for the past 15 years. My painting has gone through phases that include years of oil paint on stretched canvas, years of acrylic paint on unstretched and stretched canvas, and years of watercolor. Watercolor is best for travel or working in tight spaces. Acrylic is best for quick drying times and visible brushwork. Oil is oil, timeless in its appeal, and a properly prepared surface and ventilation are required.

April L. is a fabulous tutor! — I had never even opened up the Adobe Illustrator program until April L. came to tutor me. Within 2 hours, I was actually navigating around the system and creating a drawing! I am shocked at how much I learned in that small amount of time. April is extremely knowledgeable, patient, but most of all... enthusiastic about her tutoring! I am thrilled that WyzAnt found her for me, and I am looking fo ...
