Three years of teaching in Washington, DC has taught me a lot. Having taught middle school math in Spanish, I learned of the importance of communicating clearly and of creating lessons that would be accessible to all students. Two years as a high school geometry teacher allowed me to express my genuine love of logic to students, and allowed me to utilize numerous "real world" applications of geometry (and math in general) in the classroom. As a teacher of a support class called "Math Lab," I demonstrated patience and understanding with students who have struggled with math for years and was able to strategize ways of breaking down the material.
In addition to teaching, I enjoy sharing my interests outside of math with my students. In the middle school, I shared my interest in business with students by creating an after school Entrepreneur Club as a way to teach students the basics in starting and running a business, while raising money for the 8th grade end-of-the-year camping trip. A small group of students set up and maintained a concession stand after school and at selected school wide events called the Snack Shack, earning over $1,200 in profits in three months.
Providing links between mathematics and my students’ lives in and out of school and to their lives after formal schooling is one of my main goals as a teacher. I relate easily to and communicate well with a diverse group of students and hold high expectations for every student in my class, believing that they can all achieve academically. I feel that my strengths lie in working with high needs students in small groups. Qualities that make me a good tutor are my ability to communicate well, my natural tendency to be patient and understanding, and my genuine interest in helping students succeed in math and in life, particularly students with special needs or who have a history of struggling with math. I can give all the accolades myself, but, the bottom line is that my daughter couldn't stop praising her. Great job, Clarita!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
