In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have an ESOL teaching certificate from The New School. I have a BA degree in Music and a minor in English/Education from Macalester College. My teaching experience includes 15 years ESL teacher in the CUNY system, and pronunciation classroom teacher at Westchester Community College and Pace University, as well as several years tutoring privately to people from all over the world.
I have taken several graduate and workshop courses in the teaching of grammar, particularly X-Grammar. My teaching experience includes 15 years as an ESL teacher in the CUNY system, and 5 years as a public school English teacher. I have also been an English editor of a legal website, for documents and publications of a law firm, and for technical scientific reports and grant proposal reports.
Through 25 years of studying the vocal apparatus as a singer and actress, as well as coursework on how to teach speaking, plus 15 years experience as an English as a Second Language teacher in college classrooms and many more as an accent reduction consultant to professionals, I am uniquely qualified to teach speaking for conversation and presentations.
I have been involved in the study and implementation of speech skills for 25 years. I have studied articulation and the human voice for over 25 years. As a professional opera singer, I projected my voice, unamplified, in 4,000-seat auditoriums over 120-piece orchestras. I have also studied the teaching of accent reduction to speakers of other languages as part of my certificate program in Teaching English as a Second language at the New School University in New York. I have been an extremely successful accent reduction specialist for over 10 years to classes at important universities in the New York Metropolitan area, as well as privately to investment bankers, diplomats, medical professionals, attorneys, managers, computer analysts, sales executives, molecular biologists, hedge fund owners and their wives, and engineers from all over the world, including Russia, China, Korea, Japan, South America, India, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, Sweden, France, Africa, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, and French-speaking Luxembourg. In addition, I have been an English as a Second Language teacher for the past 15 years in college classrooms, where my duties include teaching speaking and the other language skills. All of this experience easily qualifies me for teaching speech.
