In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I identify myself as a musician just a much as I consider myself a mathematics teacher. I have been studying drums for over 10 years, and have an extensive music resume. I studied composition and drum performance at UIUC, performing in various jazz, rock, and hip hop outfits during my time in college. Currently, I am composing for a jazz piano trio and can be seen regularly in Chicago with my indie rock band.
I value music as a tool for personal growth, self-exploration, and creative self-expression. My students will be composers, my students will be improvisers, and my students will be artists. I believe that everyone has something to say: my mission is to help find and develop that creative voice.
