In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been working with students K-6 for over 8 years. Previously, I ran an after-school dance program in public schools for students in grades 3-8. Additionally, I have tutored various elementary school aged students in subjects like math, reading, and science. I earned my undergraduate degree from Yale University and completed my certification and graduate work in secondary education at National Louis University.
I have worked with numerous students in New York City to prepare for the lower and upper levels of the ISEE test. My preparation regiment includes ambitious yet feasible goal setting, content instruction, and test strategy instruction. From diagnostic to the actual test, my students have increased by over 25 percentile.
Having attended New York City Public Schools from grades K-12, I excelled in every standardized test required of students for promotion. I scored above a 95 on every regents exam, including Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, Spanish, English, US History, and Math A/B. While teaching in a charter high school in Chicago, I aligned curriculum to the English Regents in order to hold my students to a higher bar than the state demanded. In New York, I have tutored various high school students in these content areas, going above and beyond what is asked of them by the Regents Exam.
As a high school teacher, my job was not solely to teach content, but also to teach my students the best ways to access and internalize the content; namely, I sought to cultivate lifelong, successful learners. This inevitably necessitated teaching various study skills, with the caveat that every individual will have a unique set of best practices and tools when it came to studying. Additionally, I have tutored various students in study skills, be it techniques to use to plan studying or projects, or strategies to employ while reading passages.
