About Aubrey

Hello!

My name is Aubrey, and I have always loved tutoring and teaching. For the past year, I have worked as an elementary school tutor and teaching assistant with America Reads. Many students find it difficult to work through the frustration of not immediately understanding a subject, and give up trying due to fear of failure. But with persistence and help, many find that they do indeed have it within them to master the subject after all! Children are born with an innate, biological interest in learning, and the best thing any tutor or teacher can do is to help their students hold onto and/or recapture this. History is simply stories of people and events which influenced the world, and this is innately interesting. Reading is the key to information on every possible subject for every possible interest, and this is innately interesting. Writing allows students to create their own worlds, speak in their own voices, and address their own concerns, and this is innately interesting.

My goal in tutoring is to help the student find an "in" which allows them to maintain interest in a subject even when it is challenging, and to give them skills which they can use to tackle any future problems and challenges on their own. There is nothing more gratifying for a tutor, or more bolstering to a student's confidence, then when a student is able to understand a previously difficult concept or subject. I hope to work with students to engender this feeling of triumph on a regular basis, and give them the skills, confidence, and perseverance to serve them throughout their lives.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

A voracious reader from a young age, I turned that passion into a career, working for a literary agency, co-writing articles for "Psychology Today," and authoring several published novels. I love to share the joys of reading with others, whether they are just starting to learn, or working on graduate courses.
