About Liz

I have 8 years of experience teaching English as a second language, tutoring young ESL students with their homework, and editing and teaching writing to adult ESL students. After teaching English and writing in Connecticut and Massachusetts for several years, I moved to Istanbul, Turkey to teach ESL for nearly 3 years. During my time as an ESL teacher in Istanbul, I also taught analytical writing to Sociology students, and helped many ESL students write essays to apply to university programs in the United States.

I have experience working with students of all ages. I have my CELTA certification (Cambridge University's Certificate of English Language Teaching for Adults) and experience in classroom and private tutoring environments.

I have been editing and helping construct essays and academic reports, from college application essays to PhD dissertations, for nearly 10 years. I have a BA in Sociology and an MSc in Urban Sociology, and received honors for my academic writing in both programs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have years of ESL/ESOL teaching experience both here in the U.S. and abroad in Turkey. I have a Cambridge University Certificate of English Language Teaching for Adults (CELTA), and I have experience teaching business English, general English, reading, writing, and English for kids.

Writing

I have over ten years of experience as a writing tutor and editor, and I have years of training specifically working with ESL/ESOL students. I specialize in academic writing, application essay writing, and cover letters. I have received honors for my writing in both my undergraduate and graduate programs, and have used my writing to receive a Fulbright fellowship.
