About Brittany

I am currently available for tutoring within the West Village/downtown Manhattan during the evenings and weekends. I specialize in middle school reading and writing and can support test prep for the New York state test.

I taught all subjects of middle school special education and have tutoring experience from grades K through college. I have my certification in Secondary English (grades 7 through 12) and Special Education (K-12), and my M.S. in Urban Education from the University of Pennsylvania.

Due to my background in special education, I know how to break down information and teach it in a variety of ways in order to ensure that every child learns. I hold high expectations for my students and support them in finding success during every tutoring session. My students have made tremendous growth and increased their confidence and fluency in reading and writing.

In addition to having a brother with special needs, I have experience working with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, hearing impairments, speech and language impairments, Autism, and intellectual disabilities.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a teaching certificate in special education and have taught several students from ages 6 through 13 with ADD/ADHD. I know how to help students focus their attention and develop self-monitoring strategies. I also understand the literacy and educational implications of ADHD and know the right supports for memory, attention, and processing challenges.

Algebra 1

I taught Algebra I summer school for rising tenth grade, and have taught Algebra I units for both 7th and 8th grade classes.

Aspergers

I have my teaching certificate in Special Education and my M.S. in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. I have taught students with both Aspergers and ASD.

Autism

I have my teaching certificate in Special Education and my M.S. in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. I have taught students with ASD and supported teachers in adapting the general education curriculum to meet the needs of students with Autism at a K-8 charter school in NYC.

I have taken course work and implemented real-time interventions on literacy and Autism. Much of my work focused on comprehension and abstract thinking within writing. I also have experience teaching social skills, using social strips, technology, and other approaches.

Dyslexia

I have a teaching certificate in Special Education as well as my M.S. in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. I have course work in literacy for reading disabilities and have used systems such as Wilson Fundations/Just Words. I have taught several students with varying degrees of dyslexia and consistently supported them in making significant progress.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a special education teaching certificate for grades K through 12. I also worked as a special education manager/assistant principal for a K-4 school. Although I focused on special education, all students were placed in the general education curriculum, so I am familiar with both content and instructional methods for this age group.

English

I have a teaching certificate in Secondary English and have taught 7th and 8th grade English. I scored a perfect score on the Secondary English Praxis exam.

Reading

I have a teaching certification in both Secondary English and Special Education. As a learning specialist, I focused intently on literacy and designed individual interventions for decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills.

I taught reading in a self-enclosed 7th grade classroom and taught 7th and 8th grade English and Test Prep Reading. More recently, I worked for a high performing, NYC-based charter network, primarily supporting special education in K-4. I have used reading programs such as Wilson Literacy and Leveled Literacy and am very familiar with F&P, the reading benchmark employed by most elementary schools. However, my strength as a tutor and teacher is my ability to pinpoint what a student needs and design a plan aimed at him or her as an individual (leveraging their strengths and giving the right support). This approach is beneficial for every child.

Social Studies

I have taught 7th and 8th grade history, including American History and Geography. I also have experience teaching literacy and writing, which are essential skills in Social Studies. With a background in special education, I also know a plethora of memory strategies to aid with fact recall and vocabulary.

My undergraduate degree was in Political Science, which further supplements my teaching experience. I am very passionate about this subject and know how to engage my students in the discipline.

Special Needs

I have three years of experience teaching special education. In addition to having my teaching certificate in special education, I have my M.S. in Urban Education/Special Education from the University of Pennsylvania. More recently, I was the special education manager for a K-8 charter school based in NYC.

I have a brother with Down Syndrome and several years of experience working with children with special needs. In addition to intellectual disabilities, I have experience teaching and tutoring students with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, speech and language impairments, ASD, and other learning disabilities. I hold students to high expectations and push them to find success during every lesson. I understand differentiation to a high degree, knowing how to effectively break down information and deliver in multiple modalities.

Study Skills

As a middle school case manager and learning specialist, I directly supported students in improving their study skills. This includes, but is not limited to, organization, time management, schedules, and general study skills. With a special education background, I know many techniques for supporting attention, memory, recall, and fluency.
