Cornell University / West Point (Economics, Chinese)
Stanford Graduate School of Business (Other)
Harvard Kennedy School (John F. Kennedy Fellow) (Graduate Coursework)
Hello! I was educated at West Point and Cornell University where I was in the top 5% of my class and received a degree in Economics and Chinese. I also studied abroad at Beijing University and East China Normal University. Currently, I am a joint degree student at Stanford Graduate School of Business and Harvard Kennedy School, where I was awarded the John F. Kennedy Fellowship. My services are great for students and prospective students studying for or who need help in a range of topics:
--school application guidance / essays (graduate school, college, boarding/prep school recommendations and essays)
--standardized tests (ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, ASVAB, etc.)
--homework and classwork
--techniques for dealing with learning disabilities
I am relatively new to Wyzant but have been tutoring students on and off for over 15 years in a range of subjects and have worked with graduates of West Point, Harvard, London School of Economics, Yale, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania and numerous other top tier universities. Those I have helped have also gone on to earn prestigious fellowships and scholarships, including the Marshall and Truman scholarships.
While I help students develop tricks for memorization, I emphasize understanding the theory and the "why" behind particularly challenging concepts so that the student can apply that understanding to new problems he or she has not confronted before in the past. When it comes to test taking, I work with the student to develop a curriculum and study plan tailored specifically to that individual's current knowledge level, learning ability and learning style.
My Professional Background
I have a diverse range of professional experiences because I believe that life is too short not to set out on journeys that will make us stronger and wiser. Most recently, I founded a venture capital backed technology startup, which sold to our industry's largest competitor, have worked as an investment banker and private equity professional on Wall St. and in San Francisco, and have also served in the US Army. Currently I write an entrepreneurship column on Forbes, focused especially on doing well by doing good. I'm here on Wyzant because I love education and I love seeing people, particularly those who are down on school or stressed about coursework (that used to be me), achieve those little lightbulb moments and realizations that they really can be good at academics and achieve their goals.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to me with questions!
Shane Hello! I was educated at West Point and Cornell University where I was in the top 5% of my class and received a degree in Economics and Chinese. Finding a knowledgeable tutor is easy. Like real estate agents, they are everywhere. But as in all things, finding the right fit for your child is a daunting challenge. When I set out to locate a tutor for my son, I created a list of skill sets I was looking for. This list included the ability to inspire by example, a strong moral and ethical compass (don't underestimate this one - Shane is a deeply honest individual with a strong ethical code), a sense of humor, a flair for creative problem solving and, most importantly, I was looking for someone who wanted to create a success story with my son and not simply collect a fee.
Needless to say most tutors checked off only a few boxes; Shane checked them all off, and then some. I've found Shane to command a youthful understanding of the teen mindset balanced by a pragmatic, goal oriented approach that yields quick, positive results. A concrete example of this was reflected in my son's last permanent report card where Shane was able to jump my son's grade from a D to a B over the course of weeks.
Thanks to Shane, my son has the resources and tools to achieve an A on this upcoming permanent report card. Although intellectually capable, my son needed Shane to provide structure and context in a way that was meaningful to his young mind. I trust Shane and am impressed with his diligence and follow through. Shane makes himself available outside the scheduled hours and understands sometimes questions need immediate answers. Unlike many tutors, Shane is an accomplished individual and has many options professionally. Shane has decided to tutor primarily out of an altruistic need to serve the next generation. If you want only the very best for your child and won't settle for an actor/writer in waiting for a tutor, then step up to the next level and engage Shane as an active participant in your child's development.
Very good at focusing on the material at hand without getting the student distracted. All math is linked but Shane is great at focusing on what needs to be done and learned without making the task unduly complicated.
Shane is a wonderful math tutor and he really enjoys what he does. He's patient and meets your tutoring needs no matter what level. Shane really cares that you understand the material and that you are able to move forward with confidence. He also makes the journey enjoyable. I have struggled with math throughout my life and now for the first time I feel empowered. Thanks so much, Shane!
Shane is a committed tutor who knew how to engage my son and keep him on point so he could achieve his goals. Shane knows what he's doing and if you follow his process, he'll make sure you're prepared for whatever subject or test you're taking. A real pro.
Shane always knows exactly what he is doing and goes out of his way to make sure every second with him is well spent. Thanks to him, my SAT score improved tremendously, and I had a great time doing it. He is an expert with the SAT Math, Critical Reading, Writing, and essay sections and is very adept at making his students just as comfortable with the test. He is also very professional, insightful, and patient as a teacher. His personality and style of teaching is such that you look forward to studying because with him, the process is always extremely pleasant and you feel like your score is constantly increasing. I would strongly recommend him to all of my friends and family.
I couldn't have asked for a better tutor to help me prepare for the GMAT! Shane was incredibly knowledgeable in all sections of the test, and the insight that he provided for mastering certain sections was invaluable. I especially benefited from the math review, as it had been a long, long time since I had done algebra or geometry. He was extremely professional, patient and encouraging.
I can't recommend him highly enough!! Thank you again, Shane!
Shane has great insight as to the needs of my son and doesn't waste time in focusing on areas that need to be addressed. Great notes from each session.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored many students in algebra, as a subject by itself, as well as for standardized tests, such as the GMAT and SAT.
Hello, I studied Mandarin Chinese as one of my majors at Cornell University. There I was also enrolled in the FALCON program which is the only program of its kind in the US that teaches students intensive Mandarin Chinese for 12-15 hours per day over the course of one year. I studied abroad at both Beijing University and East China Normal University and also founded a language translation business in Shanghai.
I have tutored geometry for years, as both a subject itself, as well as for standardized tests, such as the GMAT and the SAT.
I have tutored many students for the GRE and GMAT. Happy to help!
