About Sam

My name is Sam B., and I am a fluent speaker of Mandarin Chinese. I am a graduate of the Cornell University Intensive Chinese Language Program which I attended at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and at Beijing University in Beijing, China. I continued my Chinese language studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where I graduated as a Chinese language major in 2010. I have extensive experience tutoring children, adolescents, and college age students in Mandarin Chinese. I teach my students in a supportive and regimented manner. I do believe that every student of Chinese can progress in his or her Chinese language skills if my strategies are learned and practiced. These are the same language aquisition techniques that I learned and implemented during my own introduction to Chinese at Cornell University. I adapt these strategies to meet the age and individual needs of each Chinese language student. My name is Sam B., and I am a fluent speaker of Mandarin Chinese. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I have tutored all levels of(Mandarin) Chinese and have created lesson plans similar to those offered in a college setting.
My Introductory Level Chinese (comparable to 8 college credits or Chinese 1160) In this level beginning from an absolutely introductory level introducing the spoken and written language. The Pinyin system in learned. Basic Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives along with grammar are established in order to create a Chinese foundation that can be used to begin a more extensive use of the language Necessary for "Intermediate Level Chinese" This level requires intensive practice Outside of the time spent in the actual tutoring session. This course involves work on all four skills: speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing.

In the Intermediate level which is Comparable to 16 credits of College level Chinese 2201/2202. This level entails continuing speaking and listening comprehension, to improve ones reading ability, to enlarge ones vocabulary, and to develop ones writing skills.

In the Advanced Level which is comparable to 16 credits of college Chinese I enforce and implement reading, writing, and speaking proficiency, as well as a course in newspaper reading and translation.
