Hello, my name is Eartha and I have been tutoring for a little under a year. I became interested in tutoring students because I attended New York City Public schools as a child and I often felt lost or slow because the teachers taught at a fairly fast pace and did not explain certain topics all the time, which lead to me not asking for help and getting bad grades which did not reflect my potential, I just needed someone or a tutor to help me learn a subject at my own pace. In the school system the teachers have a curriculum they have to teach and stick to and it must be taught within a certain time frame, so at times the curriculum is rushed or crunched and a student can easily get lost and it can lead to poor performance on exams.
The tutoring company I was working for previously tutors students every year starting from November and ending in June. But this past year due to hurricane sandy in November of 2012 and because of the location of the company, tutoring was set back which is why I am now looking to tutor with another company.
My previous tutoring company tutored students from academically poorly performing New York City Public Schools. Some of these students did not know how to read or do basic math. My previous tutoring company focused mainly on improving reading skills, basic math and English language arts, but we also tutored in other subjects such as science and foreign language. I primarily tutor in basic math meaning pre algebra, algebra and history, social studies, improving reading skills and English language arts. I am very patient, thorough and understanding and any one can learn anything if you take your time and break it down into small steps. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
