My name is Kate and I recently graduated from Taylor University. As long as I can remember I have been helping kids with school. I grew up as the second of ten children in a family that home schooled. Thus, I was always tutoring. I taught several of my littlest siblings how to read, and I loved it!
In high school, I got a job as a teacher's aid at a home school group/private school. I helped the children in all subjects through out the day. I aided the teachers in classroom management. In my last two years of high school and through college I was hired as a private tutor to several families. Through this I learned that every child learns differently and has different abilities and weaknesses.
Learning should be fun, and I enjoy the challenge of making it a good process. During college I was the President of the Multi Ethnic Student Association. Through that experience I discovered my love for cultures. This led to me getting a job teaching English as a second language at Berlitz Language Center. For the past few months I have learned how to teach adults as well as children English as a second language. As an English Major I am very adept in writing, language and reading. I am also sufficient in tutoring Math through grade 10. Finally, I did minor in flute and have taught flute to children and peers. My name is Kate and I recently graduated from Taylor University. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been playing flute since I was 9 years old. During my four years of high school I studied flute under Anne Reynolds, professor of Flute at Depauw University, former principle flutist of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and principle flutist of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. I minored in Flute at Taylor University, taking lessons for four years. I was second chair in the Orchestra and first chair in the Wind Ensemble/Band.
I was a teachers aide during high school for Kindergarteners and First Grade kids. I sat in on all their phonics classes. Also during high school, I taught my home schooled siblings how to read. I alone was in charge of all their phonics. I also became a private tutor for phonics for three different local families during High school and college. I have used all kinds of materials from Hooked On Phonics to Writing Without Tears, to Explode The Code Books.
