As a writer, instructor, and workshop leader with more than 20 years' experience, I help people overcome their fear of grammar, clarify their thinking, boost their writing IQ, and improve their pronunciation.
My workshops at Goodwill Industries and NYU Medical Center engaged employees in a step-by-step process that grew their capacity to communicate clearly and effectively.
At a local day camp, my young students discover their inner poets, year after year.
And at Goddard Riverside Senior Center, the workshop I led for six years spawned an enthusiastic group of older writers whose lives were changed dramatically through the power of self-expression.
There is no writing challenge too small or too large for us to tackle, as long as we tackle it together.
Although I specialize in teaching adults, my down-to-earth teaching methods are equally effective--and disarming--for children and teens. Students at any age will be taught to distinguish good from bad writing; learn the nuts and bolts of grammar and syntax; think more logically and plan their written assignments accordingly; and gain confidence in their ability to express their thoughts in clear, understandable, and even inspired prose.
My client roster includes NYU Medical Center, the Cornell Industrial and Labor Relations School, the New York Academy of Sciences, Pfizer, Goodwill Industries, and the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. I have also edited book manuscripts for numerous individual authors.
This year, I've been teaching advanced classes at Brooklyn College and LaGuardia Community College--experiences that have sensitized me more than ever to the needs of advanced learners.
I look forward to rolling up my sleeves with you, your child, or your teenager, identifying areas for improvement, and getting down to work--or should I say fun!
Finally, I'd be happy to work with native speakers of English as well as speakers of other languages on improving their written and oral communication skills. As a writer, instructor, and workshop leader with more than 20 years' experience, I help people overcome their fear of grammar, clarify their thinking, boost their writing IQ, and improve their pronunciation.

Margaret was very helpful with my preparation for Cuny assessment test for writing. She is a very patient and easy going tutor. You won't be bored! We wrote a couple of essays together, and now I feel much more prepared for my test. She also found a great website where I can practice at home.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
With proficiency in French and German, and broad knowledge of Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Russian, I am sensitive to the needs of speakers of "other languages." I offer many years' experience as a writer, editor, and communications professional--experience that has given me a deeper understanding of my own language. As a result, I am in a position to help others gain the English language skills they need for school, work, and life in New York City.
Grammar is to language what our skeletons are to our bodies. They're both hidden from view, but neither the English language nor our physical bodies could exist without this invisible scaffolding. You probably already "know" a great deal about grammar--you just don't know that you know it! As your grammar tutor, I will help you organize what you know, add new rules and concepts, and show you how to figure things out on your own.
If you like puzzles, instructions, and categories, you'll like grammar. And if you don't like these things, you just might develop a taste for grammar anyway!
I have taught TOEFL prep at Brooklyn College and Manhattan Elite Prep, and I continue to help prepare private students for the exam.
I'm a seasoned writer and editor with broad experience across many platforms and genres of writing. Newsletters, web content, proposals and reports are well within my skill set, as are magazine feature articles and academic research papers. I'm flexible! I'll roll up my sleeves and work with you on your project(s) in a hands-on manner. We'll identify your strengths along with the areas in which you need to improve--and we'll tackle the latter with all due energy and determination. Grammar, syntax, tone, structure, variety, clarity, and a reader-friendly style are all part of the mix.
