I am a media production teacher/instructor. I learned this as a craft, always balancing/blending theory with actual practice in the labor world. I strongly believe that passion and commitment are the key elements for video production as a profession, or as a way to share your ideas and feelings with your fellow people. I started as a teacher of English as a second language. But through my English literature studies I fell in love with the craft of creating/telling stories, and that´s why I changed my career to media production. Back in 1975 I designed Costa Rican Public TV network, channel 13 and was its production manager for some time. I studied TV production in Spain, and in London at BBC through a scholarship from the British Council. I also went to specialize my managing and training skills at NHK in Japan. I also got a master’s degree at the University of Oregon in Journalism, with a strong emphasis on communication. I have trained young and adult people in media production –video, TV and radio, scriptwriting, documentary- at the Communications School of the University of Costa Rica, at the Film and TV School at Veritas University, and also at many different education and community organizations in Latin America. Last year, before I came to New York I designed a Media Production Master’s program at the University of Costa Rica. This is just to give you a brief idea about my education and tutoring background.
In relation to my personal learning/teaching approach, which is what really interests me, I believe that my success as a teacher is supported by the way I design my courses based on my student’s needs, expectations and personal characteristics. I also challenge my students to think and act/do. I strongly believe that video production demands people with a strong need to communicate, to say something, to make production into a true personal and professional career. In my classes I insist on the hands-on approach. But always with a note of caution. It´s not just a matter of doing, it´s a matter of communicating. This is why I am prepared to discuss and develop the whole process of video production: from spectators and market need/demands analysis, to story development and creative writing. From basic equipment operation (camera, lighting, sound, editing) to basic mise en scene, art design and acting direction. Of course, since the script is always the basic tool for production, I put a strong emphasis on story creation, narrative techniques and methods, writing and re-writing.
So, I believe that any young or adult person who decides to share his/her dreams-needs to produce video, TV, fiction or documentary or writing a short fiction or even feature film will find in me strong support through experienced advice and hard work. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
