Messiah College (Biology Education)
Although my major was Biology (with a 7-12th grade teaching certification), I spent 7 years teaching 8th and 9th grade science, specifically Physical Science and Earth Science. Science is definitely my specialty, but I have tutored middle school students in many other academic subjects as well.
In addition to teaching science during the school day, I taught an academic core class for students struggling with standardized tests in order to enhance their Math, Reading, & Writing skills as well as their test-taking strategies. I also had a homework club at the end of the school day where I helped students complete homework, work on projects, study for tests, etc.
I've tutored students after school as well, either in their homes or at the public library. I was also an ESL tutor after school, where I helped English Language Learners acquire the skills needed to effectively learn. All ELLs and students with special needs were mainstreamed in my science classroom, so I have a great deal of experience working with students of various needs.
For 3 years, I was the Academic Bowl Advisor for the 6,7,& 8th grade teams of Honors students. This entailed holding practices after school to prepare students for the competitions as well as coaching students during the academic bowl competitions.
As you can see, I have a passion for teaching and tutoring all types of students! I love helping students achieve their fullest academic potential, and am extremely dedicated to do so. Although my major was Biology (with a 7-12th grade teaching certification), I spent 7 years teaching 8th and 9th grade science, specifically Physical Science
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
