About Florence

I am a December 2015 graduate of Michigan State University, where I received my degree in International Relations with minors in African Studies and French. During my time at Michigan State, I wrote over 40 essays ranging from 5 pages up to 30 pages in length. I received several scholarships from Michigan State as a result of my college application package, and I hope to be able to assist students preparing for college with standardized tests or personal statements. Finally, all my extracurricular and work experiences plus by writing abilities allowed me to become a Truman Scholarship Finalist.

I believe that every student has potential, but I recognize that many fail to see that in each student. As a tutor, I play a supportive role that empowers the student. I do not want them to feel like they are being directed the whole time. The goal is for them to come out of a session feeling better about doing things on their own.

Before becoming a private tutor with Wyzant, I have worked as a tutor with the student athlete tutoring program at Michigan state and a variety of volunteer tutor opportunities with refugees and immigrant as well as family and friends. The best thing I've seen through my tutoring so far is how my students are motivated to stay on top of their coursework and/or essays. It is always great to see a student's reaction when they finally grasp a concept or they finish an essay.

Thank you for viewing my profile, and I hope that I get the opportunity to work with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I scored a 33 on ACT English

Bible Studies

In my time of attending church, I have done everything from Bible drills to AWANA to Sunday school. In all of these experiences, I have become quite familiar with Biblical knowledge. While I am not an expert on theology, I would be able to use my foundational knowledge to assist with Bible studies assignments.

Career Development

I am currently a law school student and a full-time paralegal. To get to this point, I have experience with many volunteer opportunities, internships, jobs, and more. All of this has required me to learn about writing resumes, cover letters, branding, interviewing, networking, and more. Because of these experiences, I believe that I would be able to assist anyone looking to get to the next level in their career development.

College Counseling

Between college and now law school, I have had many experiences with various admissions processes. Because of this I believe that I would be able to assist in preparation for college. I know the application process is not easy, and I would love to assist with everything from resume writing to essay writing. I'd also be able to assist with helping students getting an idea of what they want to/where they might want to go to college.

English

English was always one of my favorite subjects in high school, and I got a 34 in it on the ACT.

Prealgebra

My profile should show that I passed the pre-algebra test and have been approved by WyzAnt to teach.I took pre-algebra in 7th grade, and have taken math courses regularly since then. I now have a better grasp of basic pre-algebra concepts through learning more advanced math. Also, my brother is in 7th grade and in pre-algebra as well, and I've helped him out when I've been home on breaks.

Public Speaking

I am qualified to tutor in this subject because I competed in Speech and Debate for two years and placed a few times at different conferences. I also competed on the Mississippi Model Security Council during y junior year of high school, and am now a member of my university's Model UN team.

Reading

I have always been an avid reader, and as a law student, I believe that my strong reading skills have brought me to this point.

World History

I self-studied for the AP World History exam in 10th grade, and I got a 4.

Writing

I got an 11 out of 12 on the ACT writing test. Also, I took a writing class all freshman year that was pretty intense.
