About Kristen

I grew up in Mount Snow, Vermont and attended the University of Rhode Island for my undergraduate studies. Upon graduation, I moved to Boston and began my teaching career in 2010 as a special education paraprofessional. In 2013, I obtained my master's degree from Lesley University in severe disabilities as well as my Massachusetts initial teaching license. Since 2013, I have worked as an elementary special education teacher for students with autism spectrum disorder. I have had experience teaching students in grades 1-6. I have six years of experience working with students with special needs and five years of paid tutoring experience.

I recently moved to Manhattan and accepted a head teaching position at the LearningSpring School for the 2015-2016 school year. I am working to obtain my New York teaching license and am scheduled to complete all requirements by the fall. My schedule is very flexible during the summer months. I can provide extra support in elementary level reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary and grammar skills, as well as assistance with class assignments and projects in all academic subjects. I also teach executive functioning and study skills. Curriculum that I have experience with and that has aided me in improving students' reading and writing skills includes the Wilson Reading Program, Read Naturally, Story Grammar Marker, Framing Your Thoughts, Reasoning and Writing and the Edmark Reading Program.

I am extremely passionate about what I do, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have a master's degree in Special Education that I obtained from Lesley University in 2013. I also tutored a student for five years that was diagnosed with ADHD.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have a master's degree in special education (severe disabilities) that I obtained from Lesley University in 2013. I have worked as a special education head teacher in Winthrop, MA for two years. In Winthrop, I had my own self contained classroom for students with autism spectrum disorder. Before Winthrop, I did my student teaching and worked as a paraprofessional for 3 years in different ASD classrooms.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor in elementary k-6 because I have worked with the Common Core standard for k-6 for the past 5 years. I first worked in Massachusetts helping adapt the Common Core standards for students on IEPs and now am working in New York City to do the same. I am very comfortable teaching all elementary ages and my teaching license in both states reflects the k-6 grade levels.
