I enjoy tutoring because I enjoy working one-on-one with students. I find that building a relationship with students and discovering their unique learning strengths and weaknesses is the best way to tutor. It has been my experience that a student can learn best when he/she understands how he/she can best learn.
I first began to tutor at an after school center. There I was able to work with students who had challenging learning needs. I greatly enjoyed my time there because I was able to work with students who were not typically given personal academic attention. It was there that I discovered my love for tutoring and found that all students can improve when they are given the tools to do so.
I received my bachelor's degree in journalism at Azusa Pacific University. I am currently pursuing my master's at Parsons The New School for design. I have tutored elementary school students in history, math and reading. I also have experience tutoring middle school students in American and world history. Due to my after school tutoring experience, I have learned to adapt my tutoring techniques to a variety of student's specific needs and subjects.
I also have writing and editing experience from being an editor of my university's student paper and an editor for my university's literary magazine. I was also the student body president for my university which has given me the tools of patience and leadership among many other thing. Education is important to me and I hope to help students succeed in their educational goals. I enjoy tutoring because I enjoy working one-on-one with students. Our daughter absolutely adores LJ. I had the opportunity to listen into their lesson yesterday. The way in which she challenged my daughter was much needed and I loved the way that my kid responded. I could smell her thinking!
We are lucky to have LJ.
We have a bright boy who can't seem to organize his school work. When Laura Jane arrived, I was taken aback by her youth and didn't think she would have the experience to deal with such a tough customer. How wrong was I? She has the patience of a monk and the incredible ability to zoom into the child's most stubborn weaknesses. In addition to providing substantive subject tutoring, she has devised charts, plans, calendars, reminders, strategies, computer tools etc...all to help her student keep up with assignments and deliver them on time. Laura Jane is a master at helping our very distracted boy gain control of his workload. I would highly, highly recommend her. I wish we had discovered her in September.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked in an after school tutoring center with many students who needed help with their general study skills and organization. For these students, I would review what classes they are taking, how much time they need to spend on each class and what they find particularly difficult in each subject. We would also review their study habits, such as where they study, what distractions are present when they are trying to study and what steps they can take to make their study atmosphere a more efficient one.
