Hunter College (Master's)
My name is Anthony and I have a Bachelor of Arts with a dual major in English Literature and Psychology, as well as a Master's degree in Educational Psychology. Most recently, I've been tutoring the students in preparation for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and English in general for non-native speakers. All of my students whom I've tutored on the TOEFL have achieved scores over 100 out of a maximum of 120 on the TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT).
All my tutoring sessions are conducted online via Skype and Google Drive to allow my students greater flexibility in terms of time and allows smaller fees due to the lack of travel required. Study material will be provided for the student and a schedule of sessions is mapped out according to each student's individual goals and needs.
A bit more background: I have attained years of experience in tutoring and teaching at different educational levels. I've taught and mentored elementary students at an enrichment program, tutored middle and high school students within both regular and special education settings, and was a teaching assistant in several capacities at the college level, among other volunteer tutoring work. Each student I tutor is given a unique course of study to accommodate the pace at which that student learns best, and I am committed to continuing that teaching/learning philosophy. My name is Anthony and I have a Bachelor of Arts with a dual major in English Literature and Psychology, as well as a Master's degree in Educational Psychology.
All rates are scaled to the subject(s) and negotiable.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The area of tutoring English as a second language (ESL) involves teaching and aiding the student in all aspects of the English language, including reading, writing, and conversational use. An ESL student's primary native language is one other than English and usually seeks additional tutelage to further understand other material that utilizes the English language. Depending on what each student's native language is, tutoring ESL may have varied paces. Students whose native tongue is a romance language will often have the easiest time in picking up English due to the languages' similarities, whereas students whose native languages are not among the category of romance languages may find more difficulty in reaching proficiency with English.
I have previously tutored ESL students in the areas of reading, writing, and particularly the conversational facet. The students I've tutored in this subject were mostly international college students who needed some help with their English to supplement their college education. However, on a few occasions, I've also tutored elementary ESL students whose parents are recent immigrants to the country (these occasions were mostly voluntary and unpaid).
