Dear Students and Parents,

I graduated magna cum laude from Emory University in 2011. My GPA was 3.8, and I was on the Dean's list every semester. I majored in Creative Writing, with a concentration in Business and Film.

I have worked with children and adults for the past 7 years as a tutor. I have tutored English and Language Arts subjects, helping students in these areas to improve exponentially. Also, I prepared/currently prepare students for the reading, writing, and math sections of SATs/ACT, as well as the PSAT. All of the feedback I have received from adults and children has been exuberantly positive.

My goal as a tutor is to help my students to become not just proficient in the material I am teaching, but achieve mastery in the subject. I am extremely patient make sure my students have a firm grasp on the subject before moving on. Normally, I use the student's textbooks and classroom materials during our lessons. For standardized tests, I use prep books, such as Princeton Review.

Also, I truly believe the best things a tutor can do for a student are instilling them with a desire to learn, and the ability to do so on their own. Everybody learns differently. Through adaptive, creative, and encouraging study, I help my students to find the manner of learning that best suits them, so that they can use these study habits throughout their lives. In doing so, I am able to not only properly prepare students for their current courses or tests, but for their entire lives.

The following is a list of subjects I tutor: English -reading and writing, vocabulary/proofreading/grammar, literature, spelling, SAT math, SAT reading/writing, ACT English/Reading/Math, Pre-algebra, Algebra 1, geometry, probability American and World History, Elementary Math/Science, Geography, Government/Politics, Philosophy, and Microsoft Word.

All the best,

Matt

I have worked with students of all ages, many of which have been in K-6th. Part of my training to tutor students at the high-school and middle school level for the Academic Counseling Department (at my high school, Christian Brothers Academy, one of the top prep schools in the country) was to go to my elementary school and provide tutoring for students who needed help. At Van Buren Elementary, in Baldwinsville, NY, I aided in helping students in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade prepare for their subjects, for middle school, as well learn the study habits they would require to succeed at the high school level. I also tutored my sister through her time in k-6th, as she had difficulty developing good study skills.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

One of the key components of my tutoring philosophy is a belief that all students learn differently. I have helped all my students in the past develop study skills that work for them individually, and have allowed them to succeed in their subjects where they might not have been able to previously. I usually like to start with discovering what each student enjoys, or what they feel they are best at, and investigating into how they learned to achieve in that area. This way, we can figure out the best way to apply that type of learning to other subjects, mainly those in school. I spent 3 years in high school helping my peers and those in grades below me practice good study and test taking skills through a program developed by my Academic Counseling Department at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, NY, one of the top prep schools in the country. I have utilized the skills I learned in that situation throughout all of my tutoring. I was also requested by my varsity baseball coach at Emory University to tutor fellow players in study skills, helping them to achieve the grades they needed to participate in a varsity sport.

Very good with both kids.

We chose Matt because of his proximity to our house, flexibility, being an Emory student (I am an alumnus) and reviews by others. We have been very pleased with his ability to relate well to both of our children. Our son is a tough one to get to focus once school is out for the day. He is six and would rather being playing once at home. Matt shows extreme patience with him but doesn't let him get away with the distractions he tries to create. Our daughter seems determined to complete her work for each session. I think Matt is pleasant, punctual, well prepared, has good assignments to give to each child, and follows up well. We bought a block after his first visit!
