About Brendan

As a writer, educator, and translator I help students with all areas of English and writing, including college essays, course assignments, reading comprehension strategies, vocabulary building, and more. I cater my lesson plans to the individual students, focusing on their strengths, and figuring out unique ways for them to become organized, capable readers and writers.

As an educator, I have taught writing at Wesleyan University and Yale College and worked in a variety of other settings––including a boarding school in the Indian mountain province of Sikkim and underserved communities in Chicago and Massachusetts. I write regularly for "Ed.," the magazine of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and have worked as a French-English translator and interpreter in the United States, France, and West Africa.

When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy reading, running, sailing, and pursuing freelance projects. Please don't hesitate to be in touch with questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a professional playwright, magazine writer, and translator currently based in New York city. My work has been staged at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Humana Festival of New American Plays, and the Yale School of Drama. I am a regular contributor to Ed., the magazine of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and I have worked as a French-English translator with clients in Paris, Montreal, Brussels, and Mali.

I have taught English and creative writing as a visiting lecturer at Wesleyan University and a teaching fellow at Yale College, as well as at the Taktse International School in Sikkim, India. I enjoy working on students in a variety of age ranges, and I am prepared to cover everything from basic literacy to advanced prose mechanics to in-depth literary analysis.

I also write regularly for "Ed.," the magazine of the Harvard Graduate School of Education

French

I am a professional French-English translator with business and academic clients in Europe, Canada, Africa, and the United States. My experience with the language runs long and deep, beginning with a childhood connection to the language and extending to a university education in French literature and professional stints in Bamako, Paris, and Geneva.

As a teacher, I cater to a wide variety of ability levels, ranging from beginners to students looking to hone their skills in preparation for high-level exams. I specialize in teaching spoken French, but I can also help students with writing and grammar.

Literature

I am a professional writer and French-English translator. I have degrees in literature and writing from Brown and Yale, and have taught at Yale College, Wesleyan University, and the Taktse International School in Sikkim, India.

I have had plays (and/or opera projects) staged at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Humana Festival among other venues, and am a regular contributor to Ed., the magazine of the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Theatre

I have worked in theater on and off for the past several years. After studying playwriting with Pulitzer prize winning dramatist Paula Vogel when I was in college, I worked in the Literary Office of the Actors Theatre of Louisville reading scripts and doing research and production dramaturgy for the Humana Festival of New American Plays. Since then, I have worked as a theater educator in the Chicago Public Schools, at the Taktse International School in Sikkim, India, and with immigrant youth through the Family Self Sufficiency Center in Salem, MA. I have also been involved in directing, performing, and producing an improvisationally devised audio drama called "The Yankee City Series," which premiere as a podcast in fall of 2012.

These combined experiences have given me the expertise to tutor a variety of areas in theater, from acting and line memorization to theater history and dramatic literature.
