About Johnathan

Hello!
Thank you for considering me as a tutor. Here's a little bit more information about me:

Education & Employment:
I graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Operations Research Engineering, before working in banking for five years. I now attend Columbia Business School.

Experience & Qualifications:
I’ve tutored more than 60 students, for 600 hours of instruction, in Dallas and New York high school and college curricula. At Cornell, I excelled in math; I was asked to consult for Cornell’s Learning Strategies Center, where I taught Calculus and Statistics for 2 years.

I scored in the 99th percentile on ACT Math, SAT Math and GRE Quantitative sections. I scored “5s” on several AP exams, including Calculus and Statistics.

Teaching Philosophy:
Students are often taught ‘how’ to attack problems with memorization, but rarely the ‘why’ behind the method of attack. All students can learn math ‘tricks,’ those who understand the ‘why’ can invent them. To this end I teach.

Why I tutor:
It's challenging and it's fun! It’s satisfying to learn a difficult subject, but it's even more fulfilling to give that understanding to someone else. Many students don't realize how intelligent they are until they've been taught in a way that accommodates their learning style. As I teach students new ways to learn, they teach me new ways to teach.

Great teaching style! Highly recommended!

My daughter just had her initial calculus session with Johnathan, and it was a very positive learning experience. Johnathan's teaching style is not just of a good tutor, but of a perceptive teacher who knows where the student needs to go. He first asks the student questions to see where the weak areas are in the understanding, while at the same time teaching the missing concepts by leading the st
