Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is a technique for finding unknowns in equations. Aside from "school" it is useful in solving problems in real life. My approach is to look for real life situations and then show that we can unscramble the unknowns in a situation using ideas we already know. While word problems give students the most problems, talking about the problems, drawing them out graphically, or simplifying them, often makes it easier to find out what is being presented and finding ways of solving the problems.

I also teach test-taking strategies and ways of calming anxiety.

Drawing

I have a BA Degree in Fine Art and Design and a Master's in Design Science. I taught drawing at the college level for a year. My doctorate degree studied children's development as expressed in drawing.

Microsoft Word

MS Word is a powerful application. Its current user interface can be learned. I can show some of the not-obvious built-in shortcuts and get students using the program with some proficiency fairly quickly.

I can show you how to use Word on either Mac or PC.

I have been using Word for years and know the various user interfaces of the different versions of Word.

Prealgebra

Algebra is a technique for finding unknowns in equations. Aside from "school" it is useful in solving problems in real life.

For pre-Algebra we start with how to write equations for things that we know well. Once we know how to write the Algebraic form of simple sentences we can work on the so-called rules of solving equations, where pieces are "missing"--are unknown.
