About Deame

To me, learning is really about adapting effective learning strategies. These strategies must be based on each student's individual style. Then, learning issues can be clarified, evaluated, and resolved. This allows learning to be a fascinating, mind blowing, and interesting experience.

My subjects of proficiency are chemistry, biochemistry, algebra I and II, geometry, organic chemistry, and physiology.

I started tutoring 5th graders in high school at the local Hispanic Community Center in elementary math and reading. Then, during undergraduate college, I continued as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for college chemistry for 2 years. From this experience I learned to adapt my instruction methods to best suit the learning style of the students.

After completing an undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree with major in biochemistry, mathematics and chemistry minors (3.94 GPA), I continued teaching during my graduate school years at Weill Cornell Medical College. I assisted in problem based learning sessions for high school students and tutored Lincoln Douglas debate. Later, after finishing a few years of graduate coursework in 2010, I began tutoring elementary, middle school, high school, and college students in algebra & trigonometry, geometry, chemistry, biology, and SAT prep. I currently privately tutor for a few students in the NY-NJ area. I have a masters in secondary science education from the College of Staten Island.

I am currently a NYC public school teacher and I do not tutor students who go to Stuyvesant High School or who have siblings who attend Stuyvesant High School.

Thank you for your time.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I am proficient in algebra I and II, trigonometry, and geometry. I've had experience tutoring students for both ACT math and SAT math.

Algebra 1

I've tutored algebra I topics such as--for example--rational equations, polynomials, rational and irrational numbers, and quadratic equations.

I prepare students to take the Regents examination for integrated algebra and help them achieve their goals.

Algebra 2

In algebra II, I include topics such as (but not exclusive to) advanced polynomials, imaginary and complex numbers, trigonometric functions, and matrices.

Anatomy

I took graduate courses in human body and brain anatomy utilizing a real cadaver. My understanding of anatomy includes structures, tissues, nerve roots, blood vessels, and much more.

Biochemistry

I was a biochemistry major in undergraduate. Later, I spent 6 years in a biochemical research laboratory. My areas of proficiency involve molecular biology, protein structure and function, enzyme kinetics and mechanisms, and metabolic pathways in relation to the human body system.

Biology

As a biochemistry major, I became very knowledgeable about cell structure and function, cellular metabolism, and various cell functions. My specialty is the cellular and histological nature of human tissue and cells.

Chemistry

I was a supplemental instructor for college general chemistry I/II for two years during undergraduate. My knowledge of chemistry ranges from atomic structure, bonding, to gas laws, energy-enthalphy-entropy relation, and nuclear chemistry.

Even during high school I never scored below a 99.9% on every single exam. This continued into college with no grade less than an A.

Chinese

I am originally from a Chinese family and have spoken Mandarin and Cantonese for over 19 years. In addition, I've studied Chinese Mandarin for over 8 years with a private teacher.

I am fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin and have tutored individuals in the past in learning to write Han Zi, read, speak, and become more culturally sensitive to Chinese customs.

I enjoy watching Chinese movies in my free time and listening to Mandarin Chinese pop.

Organic Chemistry

Graduated with a minor in chemistry with High Distinctions. I worked in an organic chemistry laboratory previously and I have a wide array of knowledge regarding organic chemistry. From nomenclature to reaction mechanisms, I've helped multiple individuals tackle the difficulty of organic chemistry.

Physiology

Full year of coursework in physiology and basis of disease at the graduate level. High proficiency and knowledge of various organ systems from the pulmonary, cardiac, and renal to gastrointestinal, dermatological, and other organ systems.

Public Speaking

During high school I consistently broke into the finals round for Lincoln Douglas Debate ever since my first tournament. Later, I was trained at the Yale's Ivy League Scholars Program, advancing my logical thinking skills and sharpening my public speaking skills.

During college, I became a hired judge for Lincoln Douglas LD debate for a high school. I critiqued the students' word economy, public speaking, and logical reasoning skills.

During graduate school, I continued judging LD debate and later provided biweekly lessons for high school students to hone their diction, quick thinking & speaking skills, and argumentation style.

I continue to judge LD debate annually.

Regents

I have tutored the Chemistry and Biology Regents exams (NY) for at least 3 years. I have extensive knowledge of test structure and question type.

SAT Reading

I am extremely experienced with SAT reading with years of tutoring experience and teaching experience.
