I am a high school art teacher with four years of experience teaching and over 20 years experience as a professional creative director in advertising and marketing. I am certified to teach fine arts and Advanced Placement Studio Art. I have already assisted several of my art students with their applications and portfolios for art colleges and for after school and weekend art programs as well.
I am capable of teaching 2D and 3D art through a wide range of fine arts mediums and techniques including; painting (watercolor, acrylic), printmaking, drawing (pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, color pencils, oil and chalk pastels), sculpture (clay, paper mache, found objects, paper, cardboard), graphic design (composition/layout,typography, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught students from age 12 to adult how to use Adobe Photoshop. I use it daily in my own work as an image editor for the web, presentations and commercial printing. I can teach use of the basic tools for editing and originating artwork, provide resources for imagery, and facilitate continued exploration specific to a student's personal style and use as well as provide guidance in plagiarism (a very very important topic relative to this software).
I have formal training in the fine arts, design and art history and have worked in the art field for over 30 years as an educator and in the advertising industry. There are theories to art making, design, identifying styles, trends, and 'appreciating' the masters that can result in the enrichment of one's own personal or professional creativity and/or skills. I can provide insight to art and design theory - practical or intellectual--through discussion, trips to exhibitions (museums and galleries) and art making experiences.
I have years of experience teaching basic drawing skills to high school students and I am also a professional illustrator. My fortes are drawing people and architectural drafting. My approach is to teach using most of the elements and principles of art; line, shape, form, value, texture, pattern, balance, harmony, space, etc. Practicing these tools expand your vocabulary of expression through drawing. I also teach hand control (trust and relaxation) and "seeing" and have a variety of projects to develop your skills that can ultimately translate into the ability to paint as well. I do not teach "super realistic" rendering but can give you the skills to advance your style in whatever way you choose.
I have been making PowerPoint presentations for over 15 years and have used them to teach classes as stand-alone marketing presentations as well as to supplement presentations.
My instruction will include the basics: adding text, images and special effects and because my background is in graphic design, I can provide tips and tricks on formatting and overall design of a PowerPoint presentation.
I have successfully taught over 100 students how to paint from the very basics such as identification of brushes (round, flat, soft, etc.), strokes and paint application, types of paint (acrylic and watercolor), painting styles and color mixing to more advanced skills such as composition and personal style in still life, expressionist and portraiture. However, I am not necessarily a realist. Additionally, I go further to encourage use of mixed media in works. I also teach printmaking, stamps, monoprints (using styrofoam and/or cardboard) and linoleum. My emphasis is on the process and understanding of how the materials should be and can be used.
I have several years' experience in professional proofreading with an advertising agency that placed extremely expensive ads with complex copy in international and national print and online publications. I also developed, co-wrote and proofread copy for ads, marketing presentations, media plans, and proposals for grants. As an educator, it is my responsibility to proofread my students' work, a courtesy to proofread that of my colleagues' and of course, a duty to proofread my own (although that's very difficult to do)... before I ask someone else to proofread it again.
